Add-ons: Will installing them affect my progress?

Streeca

First time out of the vault
I vaguely remember patches and add-ons for previous FO games could only be installed before you start playing, as installing them would invalidate gamesaves that were made without them.

But the official site recommends installing FO3 add-ons after you've finished the core game; so i'm guessing no such danger exists here?

Will installing an add-on in mid-game affect the progress i've already made, or limit my options in continuing the core game in any way?

Hi Streeca, it shouldn't have any affect on your progress. I installed all 5 DLCs at different points throughout the game and didn't notice any ill effects. I think you're good to go!

I think that's probably because all of them more geared towards higher-level players; going into the Op:A or the Pitt from the get-go would be a Bad Idea and you can't do BS until you've finished the vanilla core storyline, and the Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta are definitely designed for characters above level twenty.

As for user-made mods, I have no idea, but I'd say they might recommend that because they might break (or alter, intentionally) Bethesda's "Perfect" story.

Ia! Yog sothoth!

Yeah, i was asking mostly for the purpose of Point Lookout. I discovered the Dunwich building, went SQUEEEE, since i'm a Lovecraft freak, but after clearing it out was surprised at the absence of a quest, a further lead, or at least the book. So i searched it up and saw the relevant quest only appears in PL.

So, thanks for the answers! I'll install it once i'm level 20.

Btw, is there any chronological order by which one should play the addons, plotwise?

Nope, doing them in a different order can make for a different gameplay experience though. You can get the Chinese stealth suit early on or go straight to Mothership Zeta and pick up some alien weapons. Completely up to you.

Some of the add ons do strange things sometimes during the main game.

For example, if you play a new game and you have installed Broken Steel you might run into Brotherhood boxes that aren't suppose to be in the game until after you completed FO3's main quest.

Some locations are also different.

Yeah, and you'll petty often hear the radio broadcast that you get after finishing the vanilla game parts, sometimes right out of the vault.

Install it now, but you might not do so well until you're around level 17 or eighteen. And if you're going to wait until 20, make sure you have Broken Steel for the level cap raise.

I'm level 17 now, actually. So i'll get BS asap.

So, the fact i already cleaned the Dunwich building out shouldn't affect the quest it's involved in when i get PL?

Yeah, it and PL are the two best, IMO.

No, it won't. Just adding PL will make it possible to interact with the monolith.

Now i'm progressing through BS, and i have a new problem: i'm gaining experience way too quickly!

I'm level 26 now. Even while avoiding most unnecessary battles, it seems i'll hit 30 long before i'll get a chance to even start most expansions, let alone finish them. What happens when the level cap is reached? I'd hate to miss out on the other expansions, but if no level progress at all happens - that's gonna take a lot of fun out of it...

That's a common complaint of Fallout 3, that you level up too fast for how much content is available. Your only options are:

- Turn down the difficulty, since lower difficulty = less xp
- Get an xp/level mod if you're using the PC version

I feel your pain if you are a console user. I actually played through 2 of the DLCs before enabling Brotherhood because I wanted some leveling left for the rest of the content.
