American Canadian Culture Clash

Well, Sovz, unless refugee college if free, I still gotta pay.

Anybody want to hear my Quebec story? Well, here it is, even if you don't:

Sometime in the early 80s my father had to go on a business trip to Quebec. All the Quebecians were giving him no regard because he didn't speak English, and it began pissing him off.

So, when he had to cash one of the company's checks at a bank the firm did business with, he walked up to the teller he said: "Pardonez, Monsiuer. Parle vou le cash-ez le check, eh?"

The teller looks him right in the eye and says, "Smart-ass American," and cashes the check.

Nope, schools are not free if you are a refugee claimant, furthermore, you will have to pay international students fees if you intend to attend post secondary institute while your refugee application is being processed. The good news are that the government dose provide free French or English language courses (depends on where you live). Thus you can sit and relax for a year, collect your monthly welfare, or get a work permit and work in some lousy restaurant.

Eventually you will be deported, since your refugee case will probably be dismissed (only one American was recognized as convention refugee by the Canadian IRB) but hey, think of it as a paid vacation to Canada.

His name is Jeremy Hinzman, If you are interested in his story you can read all about it in here: http://www.jeremyhinzman.net/index.html

There is another conscientious objector from US who is a refugee claimant unfortunately I can’t remember his name. Apparently at the moment he lives with some Quakers north of Toronto (sounds like fun).

For both of them the chances of being accepted are rather slim. I should know I work as an Immigration consultant.

Guy sounds like a deserter to me.

For the kind of military profile he has, it sounds like he might have more than one enlistment before wanting to be an objector. If you keep re-enlisting in the military, it says to the Army that you want want involved.

Also, the military is all volunteer. You can't say you want to do something, sign a legal contract binding you to it, then run away when you don't wanna play anymore.

I don't know. I should probably learn more about the guy before I judge him fully. But right now I gotta get ready for work.
