An idea for bartering

In a previous post someone suggested not having money in FO3, but the response was that you could not make exact change. Well I thought of a solution. Make bartering far more basic. With equipment being roughly compared to see if it is equal value.
Example:

You find a merchant who has a sharpened spear for sale.
You place two gecko pelts onto the table.
The computer tells you if that is enough.
If not, you add a couple more to the bargain.
If it's too much, you take one off.
Then add a knife.
The deal is even, and you make the trade.

It doesn't say the exact value, it only says if it is of equal value to the item(s) you want.
I think that would make bartering more realistic.

That is a good idea though - you have my vote

Good idea. However, I'm leaning toward incorporating various forms of currency into the bartering system. It just seems to make sense that certain locales, especially the more "civilized" ones, would develop their own form of currency, whether it be caps, trade notes, drugs, or ammo (these are just examples--obviously we can't designate currency until the designs for areas have been fleshed out). Each form of currency is essentially just another item. However, the respective value of each item will vary from location to location. For instance, trade notes may be the main form of currency in NCR territory, but they wouldn't be worth diddly squat in a remote trading camp at the ass end of the wasteland where bullets are worth their weight in blood. The barter screen will always display the respective value of each item, so there's never any guess work involved.

I know the absence of a universal currency might seem like a pain in the ass, but I think it'd be worth the effort. Having localized currency just seems to add that much more flavor to the setting.

Thoughts?

One thing that I would like to see is merchants who doesn't want exactly what something is worth. I mean, a hot sexy babe who is good at bartering should be able to buy that shotgun even if her gecko pelts is worth two bucks to little. In FO/2 you only got the price lowered when you had a high barter skill. I think that my way is better:
"Yeah OK. Your gold nuggets aren't really enough to buy my gun but if I can get a cheap price for the car battery we have a deal."
See what I mean?

Well the barter skill already takes charisma into account. You could roleplay the "hot sexy babe" scenario yourself, but the system already figures the result for you. Likewise, you could just include the battery in the barter for the gun and avoid making the system needlessly complex.

Remember in FO2 in Redding they had Morningstar and Kokoweef mine scrips as currency?
