Anarchy On-Line

Ok, I admit I have missed this. But a friend of mine, and a big gamer, warned me that this game has some serious consequence, and perhaps should be called addiction online. One of his friends spent so many hours playing till the wee hours of the evening that it cost him his relationship, his apartment and his job.

Your thoughts on this?

I played it briefly when it was free (is it still?)

The graphics were horrible, the interface was brain damaging and the missions were generic and boring.

Also, I wish people would stop complaining about MMOGs being "addictive". If you're a moron who can't set the proper priorities in your life, that is in no way a games fault. Especially a BAD games fault.

Go outside, take a stroll through no man's land and smell the fresh fires of a burning farmstead. Games are for fun, but like everything, moderation is important. I suppose if they lack the self control with a computer game though, it was only a matter of time before something else made them lose their girlfriend, apartment and job.

Sorry, I just have no sympathy for people who let a game dominate their entire life.

A-fucking-men

I used to play too much, now I try to do other things in my life. Admiteddly, there are moments during the year I play more than others (usually during the summer, I don't get out as much... so I tend to play a bit more)

Spring and Fall - I'm usually out and about quite a bit.

While I've know about Anarchy On-Line for years, only few months ago I downloaded the demo, and within 10 minutes of playing it crashed. So I uninstalled it and was glad to get that put of the way.

I have been with it on and off since beta. Its addictive for short bursts, then degenerates into painful repetitions. Many people have a very bad impression of it due to only being exposed to the original Anarchy Online world itself, which can be confusing, intimidating, and inaccessible. Its redeeming feature (which still is hampered by some thing which i will address in due course) is the shadow lands. An expansion that can almost be considered a new game in itself. An alternative to the browns and oranges of Ruba Kai, and for the engines age a feast of artistic and architectural splendor (now i'm pushing it). Unfortunately, the kick in the teeth is that playing in the shadowlands enables subscription fees - you get what you pay for. Due to the free basic play, leaving the comfort of the VIP club that is the shadow lands in search of that piece of armour or weapon you cant do without thrusts you into an overpopulated world off beggars and general arse holes who are playing half the game i pay for monthly.

One final thing i must address is the latest expansion back - Alien Invasion. Apart from green men occasionally making appearances, this enables the feature of building player run cities. On paper this sounds rather good, in reality... Jesus christ. Now half the charm of anarchy online besides is its quirky alternative appeal was the idea that you were an explorer on an unknown planet of mystery... and brown. Now thanks to alien invasion going out on a dangerous trek into the unknown has transformed into a relaxing stroll through hundreds of abandoned huddles of sci fi architecture... Well this is an exciting adventure... Wait i'm just going to get muffins at that Starbucks.

...And there you go, my view and personal experiences of Anarchy online.

I have played the game before it was released and a few months after the release. I was very interested in this game because I liked MMORPGs a lot at the time, after playing Ultima Online & Everquest I was looking for something new. I was actually stupid enough to pre-order this game. I quit because I came to the conclusion it's just a boring and repetitive online RPG in which I didn't want to invest more time. I didn't get a good feel of achievement. There's hardly any sense of immersion, you just do randomly generated quests, over and over. In the same bland environments (not just the quest area's, but the large cities as well), with the same uninspired monsters. Including the lame combat system, doing quests has never been so dull. Like most of the game the story/background is very bland as well, it's not interesting or original at all. I think I haven't met anyone that was actually 'roleplaying' during my period of play as well, there was no feel of in-game communities. The only interesting part I can see is the sci-fi setting. I would say it's a mediocre MMORPG and a sucky RPG.

If you're looking to try a MMORPG with a sci-fi setting I suggest you see what Tabula Rasa is like during open beta or free month period when it's released. It looks quite promising and Richard Garriott is the producer of the game. He created the Ultima series and Ultima Online with it, which was the first big MMORPG. So I think it could be quite interesting. http://www.playtr.com/

Sounds a lot like SWG, where Tatooine is dotted with dozens of vacant player-built ghost towns. Really, the atmosphere that pervades SWG is best described as "post-apocalyptic", because the game world appears to have been swept by deadly plague epidemic of disasterous magnitude.

I'd have to agree that Anarchy Online is a piece of crap and I can't see how anyone could become addicted to it. I didn't even pay for it and I felt cheated.

Thats is so indirectly hilarious and awe-inspiring that I almost want to buy it and subscribe for a month just to see it...

To think MMORPG'ers abandoning a game and literally leaving there settlements to gather dust. Now that makes for great post-apocalyptic play for the few that remain!

Sincerely,

Eheheh. There are problems, though. Firstly, player-built towns have very generic housings arranged in such boring, impossibly perfect manner that it is almost reminiscent of BioWare's level design. Secondly, for some reason draw distance of player-built towns is about five meters. And thirdly, it's impossible to enter a player-owned estate, abandoned or not. For those reasons I am happy to state that my house is now one of those that dot the postapocalyptic landscape of Tatooine. I doubt I will ever go back to SWG. If I happen to win the lottery or somesuch, though, I might decide to purchase a few million credits on eBay and hire someone to rush me through the Jedi village. It's not very likely to happen, though.

Anarchy Online...
I started this game when Funcom introduced 'FREE' game. I always wanna try MMO (the only 1 I try is Guild War beta) but dun like those sword and magic settings and I'm a sci-fi freak  .

The game is ... well ....

1. It's graphic sucks. This game came out in 2001. So bad that it sometimes drag down the game perfomance.

2. As a froob (free-account-newbie), XP becomes hard to get at lvl 150. Missions are boring. Monster bashing is boring. Trying those 'uber' quest (require least 2 teams of playa) is suiciding.

3. From what I heard, Shadow Land (its first expansion) is more lag than Rubi-ka (the game world). And bugs is everywhere. Lag spike is constant.

4. This game is more bout kitting, grinding and twinking ( I like the twinking but it gets tired really quickly..)

Untill fallout 3 and TES : Oblivion come out, I think I have to play it to quench my thirst for RPG game..

Anarchy online Kept me amused for around a week, But i found that the Missions were Boring. It wasnt so bad when teamed up with a friend for a few Hours but to play through it on your own was Tear Inducing agony.

The Graphics were not all that good, but i would Much rather a game be Deep and Involving as opposed to pretty, AO was neither.

I gave up at Level 21. But it did Give me at least 1 happy moment.

Playing with a mate of mine, We took a mission Further afield than normal and agreed to walk it back as opposed to using the portals. The agreement was we would Fight our way back no matter what.... Anyhow this Huge wearwolf Typ thing chased us and Troy, Being the brave Hardy soul that he is Stopped to fight it, Two slaps Later Troys dead and im Running For my life... it was an Frantic 30 secconds Before The Wolf Caught up to me And Snapped me like a twig.

Troy never Trusted me again.

See Even Poor games can amuse us sometimes.

I tried anarchy online. As soon as I got into the real game I fell off a cliff because I couldn't see through the fog and I landed in the ocean and I couldn't find a wa back onto land because of the fog. That game got promptly uninstalled.

Anarchy Online

Anyone here like it? I just downloaded it a couple of days and found myself up at three playing it.
