Brian Fargo has announced Andree Wallin will be on board to do concept art for Wasteland 2. Wallin is a Swedish freelance concept/promotional artist who has worked on films (like the upcoming Tom Cruise film Oblivion) and games (Napoleon: Total War, Halo 4). Check out his impressive portfolio here.

This guy is really talented - this could be from Fallout 1 - The Glow...

Yeah, this guy is a pretty good artist. I love the guys they are getting for this game. I like the pic of the robot. I want some of those guys running around the Wasteland!

Amazing artwork, can't wait to see what he'll come up with for W2.

Some of his art looks like it could be Wasteland concept art anyway. I think they got the perfect guy. I saved most of his pics to my hardrive. :)

I dont know, the talent of this guy is clearly showing, but the art he posted looks just the same as it is "modern" these days".

His artwork is by no means "bad", but I am missing the "soul". :(

I can agree on that for only the "Voltron" picture, because it lacks the colour of the lion in my opinion.

Then again he'll do the work he's told to and to the best of his abilities. If Fargo and others tell him to paint decadent but somehow warm locations I think we'll be ok :)

Hej guys, just a quick note.
What these guy doing mostly is Industrial Design, not a illustration.

These stuff is to start pipeline of work for games, movies etc.
Its not a art for art. Its a stuff made for being used later on.
It doesn't need to be really original.

I don't like his stuff õ_õ

Sure, MagicLantern.

I know I'm a Justin Sweet junkie, but c'mon! Check out his enviros, his character sketches - they're for the industry, but they have slightly more than your average photorealistic mockups that lack any composition or any real story elements. But Wallin...

Yeah the "Glow" picture looks cool, but the rest of it is an industry standard when it comes to the enviros and below that even when it comes to his figures that populate a few of the places. His Matte stuff is better, but that's not saying too much. Guy's just not a story teller.

And that's exactly why he's perfect for the concept art.

But i do agree with Surf Solar, that it feels very generic even if it's amazing in it's quality. I just hope they go with a sarcastic and cartoony (not over the top) art style.

I agree that despite of being of great quality it feels very generic and "cold".
Important to notice that most of his portfolio is space opera though, so I'm confident he can make something more poetic/warm.
I hope they go to the cartoony "no over the top" style too.

I know that these may looks a bit confusing, but J Sweet is much more Illustrator than I Designer. Slightly cross over, but still he's more on the painter\illustrator side.

Almost all I Designers stuff looks pretty much the same - which doesn't mean that they aren't good. Originality is just not the priority here.

Since when is matte painting concept art?

Our own Wooz here has concepty work showcased here on the fan art forum section. Wallin's work is plain matte painting, which in its essence would be different from either (promo) illustration or concept work.

Concept art is there to illustrate concepts, right? Give a feel of an environment, 2D fodder for 3D artists etc etc etc for costumes or areas. Oh well I guess we'll see how he pulls it off

True that - yet his work is loose enough for CA, while his chosen style works as illustration if made as such. Wallin, when adding characters, achieves a movie still-like image

I can imagine Andree Wallin doing the game cover, manual cover, all that big, pretty, in your face stuff. Good luck to him. The original Wasteland cover is one of the greatest imagines ever used in gaming, I'm sure he can match it...

Just a thought - As for the actual game - I would be happy with a post apocalyptic version of Grand Theft Auto 2 - with less cars obviously. Imagine being able to move through the original Wasteland cover and enter the building...*drools*

i think that is a really bad idea, to make that work would rather they focused on the RPG aspects on the game.

Err not game play wise, but the camera angle or viewpoint - Top Down.

oh sorry, miss read carry on then. Although it do not sound that bad, if you make it like the cover you need to have camera angles tho fore each locations else you have to do it in 2d or 2.5d i think.

Wasteland ran in the same kind of helicopter view, it was quite popular in that time. But I very much doubt it'll be utilized in Wasteland 2.
