Anyone else interesting in Anime? Here's two of my favorites:

Vision of Escaflowne
Akira
Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke), though I don't like it as much as the above two.

I've got Akira and Mononoke Hime as files, I wish I could get a better copy of Akira though.

I only saw the akira books, not the movie :-(
The author of Mononoke Hime made my favourite anime series when i was a kid, it was called "conan", it created many of the rules that anime are based, and it was the most fascinating post-apocalyptic world i ever saw (even better than fallout), though the story is a bit dated and childish i would still see it again if i could, my kid saw some episodes of a rerun and prefered pokemon, the only time we had a dispute over animated series :-)

I think i saw 18 anime movies, liked every single one of them (i never saw the original heavy metal, is it any good?)

I wish I could get ahold of the Akira manga, I've got Volume 1 since Dark Horse Comics reprinted it. The anime is a *lot* different than the manga, as they had to fit the entire storyline into 120 minutes. You can probably rent it at any video store.

It is still considered one of the de facto anime ever produced, almost every manga is compared to it in terms of quality, and only a few are said to surpass it..

Someone said the magic word... ::drooling::

Here in San Francisco, we've got quite an otaku community. Could be the fact that we're right over the pond from ground zero... Well, anyway, here's some I thought worth mention:

Neon Genesis: Evangelion (more important than oxygen!)
All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku
Neon Genesis: Evangelion (can't say it enough)
Kite (but the ending made me lose my faith in humanity...)
Princess Mononoke (only saw the english version:-()
Bubblegum Crisis (Go Linna!)
Perfect Blue (This one must be a conspiracy by Japanese therapists)
Dragon Half...

Oh, and Neon Genesis: Evangelion

I've never seen NGE but I've heard it's good. I've got a Streamload account (www.streamload.com) full of Anime movies (about 120 GB from various sources, various duplicates), however since I don't have the deluxe version of Streamload, I can only download 100 megs a day, and even the, sometimes it doesn't work. :(

I haven't been able to find any good copies of Bubblegum Crisis on IRC (the de facto place to download movies), though I did get a DVD-quality copy of Mononoke Hime (very nice).

If you want a copy of the Neon Genesis OAV (Death and Rebirth), you can download it at gnute.com (Be warned, I am really not sure of the quality on it, as I haven't had the time to download it yet. Also, it will ruin some things for you...)

Aside from that, I really can't help you. I usually just borrow, rent, or buy.

Excuse my ignorance but could somebody explain the difference between Anime and Magna? I know theres a differenece, but I am not well versed in these forms of entertainment (although I am learning!). It would be a great help if someone could answer that question. Thanks

RE: Someone said the magic word... ::drooling::

I know I'm going to get yelled at for this but... Anime sux (this is my own personal opinion). Not only are the storylines rather stupid... But I find the scripts and artwork extremely lacking. The ONLY anime I like is Appleseed & Record of Lodoss War(original). They, to me are the only ones whos artwork is even close to par with Marvel comics. And whos stories are anywhere near engaging.. Though, I must say, most all comic book artwork is going downhill. Which pisses me off. It's all going Manga. It's makes me, an artist who's grown up wanting to be an artist for Marvel, want to burn down the entire facility. Give me Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane any day...

Well what have you watched? Yeah, most of the garbage "anime" that reaches the USA really sucks, like Pokémon, DBZ, etc. but shows like Escaflowne, Akira, and others have very deep storylines and very good art.

>But I find the scripts

Again, what have you watched? Some of the artwork is extremely high quality, like Akira, and others like Pokémon appears to run at 2 frames per second.

Marvel comics? Bah, only the most recent stuff can even compare. Take for example Akira manga, which was released in the late 80's and early 90's to the USA, it featured some of the grandest colorizing ever seen at the time, which totally blew away any of the American comics. Now, they are getting better, stuff like Spawn and such are very good.

Nah, it's all about Katsuhiro Otomo. I do have to say that Todd McFarlane is very good.

You need to see some of the better Anime. I have to admit there is a lot that REALLY sucks, but there are a lot that are great.

Manga is Japanese comics, or "graphic novels" as some call them.

Anime is Japanese "cartoons," though not so much cartoons because they are not all meant to be funny or for kids. They mean more in Japan because many deal in adult themes and other such themes that makes them suitable for all different age groups.

A very good place to get movies is on IRC and on Usenet if you can get it (many usenet servers don't have complete copies).

Philistine!

Such an outrageous statement would never come from one who has witnessed such gems as NGE or Akira.

I recently saw another beauty, Ninja Scroll. That was really something. I urge anyone to see it, except, perhaps, *you*. You know who you are.

Ninja Scroll was the first anime I saw. Sadly it has some of the WORST voice-acting in the dubbed version. The "hero's" voice character is a really poor actor.

RE: Philistine? No, a person with an opinion.

I stick by my "outrageous statement". As for what I've watched... All of the above and more, my best friend is an anime freak and I've spent many a long weekend with her, watching anime. I like Appleseed because I think Masimune Shiro(SIC) is a great artist and writer. And Lodoss War... Well, I'm a big D&Der... And maybe I should've been a little more specific, I agree, mostly, with what you said about Akira. Also, Vampire Hunter D, these are rather good, their just not anything I will sit sown just to watch or read, unlike the previous two I spoke of. But, to be honest, I have nothing against Anime in general, and I respect the fact that people like it(to each their own). It's the fact that it's invading what used to be my only refuge from it. It's also the people who think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread that annoy me; "Oh, hey, did you see that last episode when Goku went to 30,000? Dude it was awsome. Him and...". I mean, c'mon, people, pick up an issue of Spawn, Youngblood, Mid 90s X-Men(starting with the new issue #1), the Maxx, or Ghost Rider, and try to tell me that Any anime can even compare to their level of reality and depth...

And now for Marvel Comics... Well, I've stopped reading them because I hate where they're going. All the artwork is going anime/manga style and the stories(while outrageous to begin with) are getting just cheesey. Oh well, I guess I'll just ahve to settle with reading my old issues of X-Men & Justice... And may the artwork be eventually returned to what it once was... Good.

Heh. I had one of my rather... conservative... friends over to watch Ninja Scroll and Ninja Resurrection... nearly shit herself, she did! I must take this opportunity to comment on the apalling lack of decapitated children in American media... :-)

Try the english actors from Bubblegum Crisis. I've heard some bad dubs in my day, but the english vocals for BGC gave me an actual, physical headache.

Sometimes I wonder why they even bother to do an english dub. Most of them are real half-assed fare, not nearly adequate to the consummate anime fan. And with voices like that, there is little to no chance that the casual anime watcher will be able to take whichever dubbed title they happen to be watching very seriously at all.

But at least they catch the inflections of the voice. Ninja Scroll sounded like those really bad Godzilla dubs.

(Monotone voice): "Oh no. Godzilla .. is .. coming. Run."

They should always put both versions on the DVD.

But that's just it, the American market is not flooded with the *good* anime, it's flooded with the bullshit that is "appropriate" for young kids because many ignorant Americans still think Animes are like American cartoons, for kids. The bulk of the quality anime is still in Japan, or on IRC, or in collections of people who won't even touch that Pokémon/DBZ/Sailor Moon shit.

RE: Philistine? No, a person with an opinion.

I agree that americans in general don't get to see the good stuff. And, as I said, I have nothing really against anime... To be honest it's only DBZ freaks I don't like. I've noticed it's really the only anime that people get THAT hyped up about... and Pokemon. I have actually never seen an episode of Sailor Moon(And that was my friend's favorite).

Anyway, that's my two cents... And I'm sure I'll be putting in a few more before this thread's gone.
