One question: Who are you anyway? You seems know much about my country? I mean like Suharto or those ethnics thingy?

>But there was a lot of
>ethnic violence in Indonesia that
>also had a religions dimensions
>before this, following Suharto's departure.
>I thought most of the
>Christians were Chinese and most
>of the Muslims were Indos.
> But I have heard
>that the Chinese, which like
>in most of Southeast Asia,
>were also the more wealthy
>class and had a bad
>reputation in Indo for mistreating
>Indonesians, and that the Indonesians
>had long grievances against the
>Chinese. That would make
>this more an ethnic conflict
>than a religion one.

The main reason were echonomics. Suharto goverment are racialist. I say again RACIALIST. Know Hendrawan? Olympics Gold medal winner for Badminton? Well he haven't got Indonesian citizenship until recently. After the revolution in 1966 Suharto has create Anti-Chinese sentiment and blame Chinese for 1965-66 Communist Revolution. Lot of them didn't get Citizenship, and the government treat them poorly. But somehow lot of them very wealthy (Not all! In Borneo most of chinese very poor. Even poorer than Dyaks Tribal. Well at least some of Dyaks got 4 Motorbikes and those chinese were starving.). In Suharto's fall 1998, i think you already know that, the demonstration of University student, few got killed, one of them my friends brother then the conflict and some riots in Jakarta. The Riots turn out to be some kind of pillaging and somehow most store in the area owned by Chinese. Then it all happens and create more anti-Chinese sentiment.
Well my dads told me: "In 1965 things are worse. We killed lots of Commies back then. I even carry a revolver everytime. And your grand pa keeps a SUb Machine Gun in the house."(he still a Junior High School back then.)

>Now with Suharto gone, Megawati

>politics, kind of like Malaysia?

I think no. Indonesian don't become Islamic Nation. Well there where some Islamic Party back here but if they won 2004 election, i think it wont happen. We are not ready yet. My concerned were there where some Communist organization back here. They didn't say they were Commies but they think like COmmies. About Labor, Capitalist, etc. It will be worst if they could control my nation. Believe me, something big happens here. Oh yeah, Suharto, altough already fallen, still got power and money here. You know that his son, tommy, murdered a senior Advocate because the Advocate sue him 18 month in prison for corruption? Well the advocate daughter were my friend you know.

>I kind of figured that the
>target of the Bali blast

>something to do wiht the
>East Timor business. But
>the Australians were playing wiht
>the Suharto's government even before
>East Timor broke away, primarily
>about offshore natural resources (I
>think its natural gas).

One more theory. Another suspect caught yesterday. And from his hideout we got SOme M-16 and few hundreds ammunition. All traced back to Phillippines. Well the Moro rebels probably feels we betrayed them. First Indonesia supports them and create peace in Phillippines for some times. But they again rebelled and we didn't support them again.
The main goal of bombing perhaps to create an instability in our Region. Thailand and Phillippines also bombed too you know. And now the Relation between Thai's and US become worse....

By the way, nice comics. Somehow we also got similar concept about judgement day...

Dear Mr. Bhass-

Thanks for the insight.

As for me- I lived in Singapore for awhile back in 88-89 as a student, then again a few years later to work. My brother is living there now but used to live in Bandung. Currently working on a grad degree and I was working on comparison between Asia and Africa, and the fall of Suharto was a topic and I did a bit of research on the actually demonstrations. Some interesting dealings between the opposition and the military during Suharto's last days. Even the shootings at the University were interesting. I also used East Timor as a simulation for international intervention before East Timor went independent, so I have been interested in Indonesia for awhile, and the region. Blah blah blah!

The anti-chinese sentiment goes back to after the Second World War, and I think you can find the same things in Malaysia during the Malay emergency. In someways the riots in Indonesia reminded me of the LA riots here back in the early 1990s, a lot of people taking advantage of little law and order.

I had heard about Tommy, but I also heard a lot of things about the Suharto family. Before the Asian Financial Crisis the estimated net worth I think was like 80 billion US$ and one of the reasons Suharto was reluctant to deal with the IMF was to protect his family fortune. It seems IMF reforms also threatened the Suharto family share of the economy.

Commies might be bad, but so is corruption. So what is the current feeling about Megawati? So there is a Philippine connection too? Bad news for ASEAN. I remember the Sabah affair.

Would like to hear more of your views on this some time.

Cheers,

Welsh

This reminds me of that part in "Monty Python's Meaning of Life" where everyone at the dinner party dies, everyone goes to the afterlife, and the guy reveals which religion was right all along (something like 7th day Adventists).

"Did we give up when the GERMANS bombed Pearl Harbor?"

>Is that true about the 10%?
> I thought the largest
>single faith was Islam, but
>that the fastest growing was
>LDS/Mormons?

Well that's if you believe their membership figures. I mean this is a religion that baptises their dead by proxy and adds that to their list. I remember my mother speaking of a missionary that was so desperate to meet his "quota" of people converted that he "converted" someone by buying the guy fish and chips.

I mean how do you actually measure how many people believe in a religion? By having your name on a membership list?

Maybe the "fastest growing" is in respect to corporate assets. The LDS church probably has the second most amount of money, second only to the Catholic church. Whereas in other churches you give willing and anonymously during the church service, the LDS church has streamlined the process by taking a flat 10% tithing off its active members' income.

As for you Mr Bhass, God has a special punishment in store.

Oh my god! Bandung! Where? I'm in Bandung too! Well bandung is soo small and i think there only one guy called Bhass live here.

You seems know much about this business. Here are some of my view.
-The shooting in University is still a mistery. The bullet used were Quick Shock exploding bullet. We still knew nothing about it. Well my dad was in Intelligent so i believe him.

About Phillipines, do you know that the Aceh Rebel got connection there too? Let see the bombing of Phillippine embassy were done by Aceh rebel because Phillippinos caught some of their agent there. There are something big happens here you know.
About Megawati and corruption, Corruption has become some of....errr part of our Culture, should I say. Perhaps only late South Vietnamese more corrupt than us. Thats our problem, Corrupt Official. Let me gave you an examples. Near my house live a Government Official, Which he is only a Secretary of something. His actual income perhaps lower than my dad (an Army LTC. Less than 500 bucks a month.)But lets check his family fortune. 4 houses near mine (and a big houses i should say!) i don't know about the other houses, lets talk about car. My dad given an Isuzu Phanter minibus by his office (only until my dad moved to other base. Only temporary...) and got an old FIAT Station Wagon made in 79. Oh yeah don't forget my Piaggio Scooter which is older than me. Let see his. I saw at least six car (Some of them BMW or Mercedes...) and my friend (His neighbour) told me that he got a Jaguar!! Well last year someone broke into his houses and stole some CPU. He angry at the Police station and tell them everything except intelligent. I can't imagine his face after the police caught the burglar which is his own son. That's what i call Karma. His son were an addict. (Hah hah hah.... may you rot in hell slimeball!!)
But situation here were better than before Megawati become president (at least better.... i don't say good). At the Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid (a.k.a. Gus Dur. Gus is a honorary title man in Java, like "san" in Japan . Some of my family calls me Gus too...) thing were worst. But now we still got high corruption level. Ask your bro about streets in Bandung? That's what i call a corruption. Megawati don't have enough power and she perhaps didn't want to use her power know. Besides lot of people hate her, and some of her former voter turn against her nowaday. Lots of his official were corrupt but she didn't got power to turn them down. Believe me.... things are bad here.
About Soeharto, well he got lots of Nepotism. His daughter were Social Minister. Lots of his son control big company and from there they suck peoples wealth. Even there were rumours that from Hajj Pilgrim, Suharto got 500 dollars per person. Well we got about 150-250 thousands hajj pilgrim every year so count from that. Also my lecturer talk about lots of corruption from government official.
So i think President Megawati must replaced by someone who got powers and ability. Well I'm not her supporter you know and I won't vote her. Perhaps the right person were the Governor of Yogyakarta and heir of our great kingdom Majapahit and Mataram, Sultan Hamengkubuwono XI......

Well nice talking to you Welsh, ask something if you need it....

RE: Sarcasm appears to be lost on people now-a-days.

Under the term of International Convention of human Right, Forcing someone to adopt a religion is a big VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHT!!! Even bigger than murder because adopting a religion is a right of every human from the birth until death!!!

Dark Underlord... you´re such a fucking asshole , you really think god is on your side? Jerks like you really deserve to die. If there is life after death, be sure that god will not even let you pull his finger: he´ll rip off your balls with his own hands....

Pd , MrBhass : Everything´s fine with you, and I'm not defending you neither. I´m expressing MY opinion, plain and simple.

Now we know why you should never talk religion, politics or weight on dates.

Seems as if Dark Underlord is still joking about and perhaps the joke might be getting old.

Guybrush, sharper pencils would have noted that DarkUnderlord was joking around and to put all doubts to rest, the subject line of this message, http://www.nma-fallout.com/cgi-bin/forum/index.cgi?az=show_thread&omm=26&om=1425&forum=ForumID2 , conveniently states, "Sarcasm appears to be lost on people now-a-days."

But could you please express it in a less fanatical way? You're preach your atheism/agnosticism much like a Bible-thumping evangelist. Look at the other messages in this thread, they're all coherent and reasonable with exception to DarkUnderlord's messages which are a joke, repeat, ARE A JOKE. You're behaving exactly like the atheist lunatics I described in this message: http://www.nma-fallout.com/cgi-bin/forum/index.cgi?az=show_thread&omm=4&om=1425&forum=ForumID2 . Show a little dignity.

Oh, and do us all a favor and reply to the message you're replying to, not the root thread message.

I can call myself religious, but most of this stuff made me really laugh. :) I am not offended by a game like Fallout, because it could reflect real life. Just a game like this does not interfear with me being a Cristian. It's not like I am living like in the game (actually, I can't play anything but a good person in any RPG, paladin, do-gooder, except I steal :) )

To me it's more like, let's see who laughs last at the last judgement.

I am a hardcore athiest, and I have never been religous, although I do play Call of Cthulhu sometimes... }>
