Any board game fans?

First time out of the vault
I'm increasingly finding myself less and less attracted to PC gaming. I've started playing board games with my extended family and friends. I've gravitated to board games for their replay value, strong well-developed mechanics, and the community feel.

We mostly play the top end stuff on BGG.

Anyone else a board game fan/freak?

I may be to the point where I never upgrade my computer again to play games. The disappointments have been too frequent for the past 7-8 years. The balance of Agricola is fabulous. No bugs to overlook in the best board games.

Here's my list:

Agricola
Race for the Galaxy
Puerto Rico
Princes of Florence
Arkham Horror
Year of the Dragon
Shadows over Camelot

I was a big Axis & Allies fan during highschool. We had a regular group and played weekly. We had special little areas where each country sat and had huge flags of each nation hanging from the ceiling above said areas.

One of our Jewish friends came over one time to watch and did not appreciate the giant Nazi Battle Flag hanging from the ceiling. :P

We also butchered the rules to the game and had our own house rules over time. I enjoy modifying rules to various boardgames and "perfecting" them.

I miss playing it :(

I am a bored game fan HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

srsly

I like Clue and Monopoly and Scrabble. Scrabble is a great game to cheat in, just flip a piece upside down and claim it's a blank piece.

I'm a board game person, but I don't have enough people to play with usually, I play Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, and Axis & Allies is awesome.

There's one board game I've only played once or twice but I can never remember the name, it's something of a governmental control game, the players can play as America, Russia, Germany, UK, and a bunch of others set in modern time, each has their own special abilities and such, you can rig elections, you can assassinate other political opponents, you can hijack resources and alot more, it was pretty in-depth and it took forever to end one game, but it was really great.

Axis & Allies was good stuff. I still have it in a closet somewhere with Fortress America.

I have the PC version of A&A, but I actually enjoyed the old board game, the setup, rolling die, it's all part of the experience. The PC version is too clean and artificial.

Did anyone see that they sold the Axis & Allies moniker and made a shitty RTS game out of it?
Making it RTS defeats the purpose of using the A&A, and they're pimping to an audience for whom the name has no meaning anyway.

It's like the Fallout 3 of A&A. :freak:

Scrabble is about the only game out of the bunch that I can get my girl friend to play, but I dislike having to play small words for big points and not looking for the biggest and best words. Also, knowing 4 languages is a huge burden as I have way more to process before I find the right word (nope, that's Greek...nope that's Latin, wait is it English too...nope).

For those who like Clue, may I suggest this new game, Android? It's apparently a huge, spawling whodunit with players competing to prove "their man" guilty. The added intrigue is that each character is fleshed out and has their own "plot." Imagine Ms. Scarlet had a charm skill so she could collect evidence more easily, but was running from her past life as a call girl.

You have the choice to solve the mystery and sort out your past, all in a futuristic SF world with a noir feel. There are lots of decisions to make, and no perfect ending. I haven't played it yet, but it sounds like a lot of fun.

Anyone ever play one called Samurai Swords? I think it was originally called Shogun but they got sued by someone.

I played a ton of that one when I was young. Not as complex as Axis and Allies, but a bit deeper than Risk. It takes place in fuedal Japan (obviously) and at the begging of every turn you allocate your income (koku) to various places such as recruiting units, building forts/castles, hiring ronin, hiring a ninja to assassinate an opponents general, and a few others I can't remember. A great strategy game, probably the "epic" board game I've played most next to risk.

Board games I enjoy...

Stratego has always been a favorite.

Axis and Allies.

Clue (particularly the expanded deluxe edition that came out a few years back.)

Monopoly.

Horror Clix (Don't know if it really counts as a board game but I'll include it here.)

Chess/Checkers of course.

Risk.

Scotland Yard (does anyone else even remember this game?)

Those are the ones I play most often though there are others.

Some time ago me and some friends pooled money together and bought "Arkham Horror" along with some of its expansions, and get together and play every now and then. It's kinda like an over-simplistic version of a Cthulhu PnP session, which works quite well; all the fun with none of the mess and the gruesome PC deaths.

Apart from that...a game of Monopoly or Risk now and then, Mysteries of Peking, and of course the mighty HERO QUEST.

A girl I know wants to teach me "Settlers" ... It sounds like a killer RTS bored game but, I won't be able to spam lings or something cool so, it sounds like teh suck?

Fury of Dracula does look good, I'll have to check that out.

And I keep meaning to pick up "Arkham Horror" it's been on my list of things to do probably since the game came out :P I'm a horrible procrastinator.

I know Arkham Horror's been getting a lot of props here, but I thought I could throw in another +1. There are several expansions out for it now, too-- some that just add to the cardset, some with entirely new boards to annex on to the original.

221b Baker Street pits you against several friends as you make your way around a large freeform board trying to piece together enough clues to answer the questions on a pre-selected mystery card. Expansions are available for this one as well-- handy for when you run out of mysteries to solve.

I'm pretty surprised no one's mentioned Cranium yet. You play in teams of two, and to advance on the board you've got to pass a challenge in one of four fields-- Worldplay/word puzzles, Trivia, Art (typically sketches or sculpting, sometimes with a twist), and "Performance" (games based around charades, impressions, and humming). I've never played a better party game in all my life, and it can be even more fun after you've tossed a few back.

I love board games! Me and my friends try to play at least one game every week. We play everything from Settlers to Twilight Imperium.
