Heya

Can you guys tell me if my pc is gona be able to run new age shooters like Half life 2?

This is my machine:

512mb ram
Geforce 4200
AMD Athalon 1.8ghz

Any good?

It's not gonna be very good, but it looks like it will run it.

Especially Doom3, I have almost the same specs, and it won't even boot, but you have double my ram.

You need a full DX9 compliant graphical card, that just isn`t enough. You might get a good deal on a new processor now, if that`s a 1900+ then it`s not enough too.

I've got a Geforce 2 MX 64MB and it's DX9 compatible, and a P4 1.5 Ghz. It runs most anything, but not very well for the new FPS games.

Glad I don't really like FPS.

In practice it isn`t Dove, although in theory you`re right. It strugles with shaders 1.1, 2.0 is out of the question, it doesn`t have power to handle 9.0c, it`s a 8.1 card, period. I know, i have one packed together with a GeForce9200, i`m using a cut down version of the Radeon 9600 pro and it still isn`t really good enough, particularly with my athlon 2100+ (1700).

He really should upgrade.

I've got a lot of wires in my computer.

And sometimes, when I kick it, it goes *beep beep*.

AMD ATHLON 2.02 Ghz; 512 DDRAM; RADEON 9200 128 DDRAM 133 Mhz. Doom3 runs like a charm...

Sorry for the derailment, but did that term give anybody else strange mental images?
If not, carry on as before.

AMD Athlon XP-M 2.5ghz
768 MB DDR RAM PC 2700
ABIT NF7-S
Seagate 120 gigs with 8 meg cache

Oh, and 15 USB ports becaue I can, this piece of crap only has TWO. Grrrr... If it'll run Stalker, I'll be happy. :D

since no one *answered* your question, i played doom 3 on a friend's pc, about the same specs, 200 mhhz more (its a 2ghz athlon) and a gf 4800 wich is basically the same that a 4200, and it ran the game pretty decently on medium settings. But about half life, keep in mind the fact that Id sided with nvidia, and Valve sided with Ati, wich might mean HL2 wont be optimized to run a geforce just like doom 3 runs like ass on a radeon.

So I'm going to need to upgrade too?

Dammit.

Hey, you have resigned to that tought awhile ago, i know i have a GF2mx 400 and i did. I didn't even try to install doom, seeing as call of duty failed to even try to get ingame because of the "ancientness" of my video card. Right now, i'm just thankful Rome, WH40k and Evil Genius all work quite well, so i have great new games to play (you should try those, if you want an order of reccomendation go for Rome -> WH40k -> Evil genius )

Right

As a present to myself im gona upgrade at christmas, what should i get? More ghz or a raedon 9800?

by christmas the new PCI-E boards for AMD64 should be easily available and so should the new lower budget S393 CPUs. unfortunately that will probably also mean you'll have to upgrade your 3dcard at the same time.

(luckily, the new midrange cards seem to rock... 175-200$ for a card that beats a 9800pro hands down...)

but of course my advice might be somewhat useless as i am one that tends to buy a new pc (or at least do a heavy update of my gaming rig) every 3 years. (with smaller updates each year like RAM, hdds,...)

Both. New games have better AI, facial animations and phisics effects that require more processing power, and better effects, so you`ll need a better 3d card. Try this place to see what´s happening

This thing runs FS2004, and I guess Rome TW, so I'm not upgrading for a while I think.

I's suggest you wait until the geforce 6600s come out, they are mid range cards, PCI-E compliant, and beat the crap out of any 9800... Tough buying a Pci-e one would probably mean a new mobo too..

My secondary computer is a 2.08GHZ Athlon XP 2600+ with a nVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 and 512MB of ram and it runs Doom 3 at 40-75 FPS. I also runs Counter-Strike: Source just fine, I think it runs Counter-Strike: Source way better than it runs Doom 3.
