My secondary computer is a 2.8GHZ Athlon XP 2600+

You must be reading something wrong, I don't think that combo is possible.

Sorry, It is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ clocked at 2.08GHZ. Thanks for pointing that out, I will fix it. After doing construction all day I am extremely tired.

I's suggest you wait until the geforce 6600s come out, they are mid range cards, PCI-E compliant, and beat the crap out of any 9800... Tough buying a Pci-e one would probably mean a new mobo too..

errrr, did i just say that?

anyhow, there will also be bridged 6600GT cards for AGP (using HSI-chip), but those will probably take longer before they hit the market.

I also runs Counter-Strike: Source just fine, I think it runs Counter-Strike: Source way better than it runs Doom 3.

a big fucking DUH!

CS:S is a heavily cut down version of the HL2 engine and is NOT to be compared with the actual HL2 engine...

You are right, what was I thinking? I was REALLY tired the night I typed that post.

euhm, forgotten, those are completely different cards you know...

one is AGP and the other PCI-E...

Oh, well here is the point when i dont know shite about any of this... Which one would perform better then?

I have this beast of a card (GeForce 6800 Ultra) and an AMD 1800+ @ ~1500 MHz.

So basically I got a kick ass 3D card and a aging processor. It runs Doom 3 at the same frame rate at every graphic setting.

As soon as I get the money I'll get a AMD 64 3400+.

So my advice to you is to remember to get a good processor with your new 3D card.

Yes i have bought a new processor. Could someone please tell me which card from those links would play games such as Half life 2 and Vampire Bloodlines better?

that is not really the point...

both cards use a different interface slot (AGP & PCI-E). your motherboard probably only supports one of both (only very few support both).

you might wanna do some research first you know...

You can play on high settings on 1024 with approx 40 fps if you disable shader. Thats what I do anyhow but I have double your RAM. Lets see some more specs, whats the speed on your RAM? Hdd? How much power is your comp getting? do you know how to clock your computer? These things are enormus power boosters.

Okay here is what i have found:

My bus type is apparently PCI, ISA, USB

So will that mount the 6600?

No, no no...

You need to go to the docs that came with your motherboard and find if it has an AGP (1x, 4x or 8x) or PCI-Express slot.

Here it`s the brown thing, an agp slot

or here

Or if you have a better PCI-E one like this

You don't really need the docs, if you can remember or find the name and brand of your motherboard it can easily be looked up, in case you can't identify the slots by looking at them.

Okay i have had a look inside and it says it is an AGPx1

Buy a new motherboard then, that´s pre-historic, no new video card will work properly on that.

But are you sure it´s 1X? Maybe you could ask someone to check it out, just to be on the safe side.
