Any Halo fans here? no? well here is a Halo thread anyway.

Well, what can I say?

Lets start from the end, shall we?

For those who are not interested in Halo or do not really pay attention to it, Bungie (creators of RTT games Myth and Myth 2 along with the FPS series Marathon and the upcoming shared-world shooter Destiny)
used to develop Halo about three years ago they finished the series with complete closure and a fitting end, tear inducing even, but Microsoft wouldn't let the franchise die, and created a new studio: 343 Industries, which then proceeded to beat a dead horse and single handedly destroy the entire series. (A good comparison is what Bethesda did to Fallout, but on a much worse scale.)

343i killed the franchise and all of this new lore (Cryptum, Primordium, Halo 4 etc) is utter shit, especially the part where the Forerunners are an actual species and not Human beings, and that whole MANTLE mess just aids the stupidness.

Halo 4 was the final nail in the coffin with its gameplay, Jesus Christ, its Call Of Duty in space!

Halo ended at Reach and Master Chief is still floating in space,in indefinite Cryogenic sleep.

Anyway, now that's out of the way, lets discuss things that aren't to do with the new games and 343!

I'll do you a favor and actually respond to this thread.

Ok. . uhm. . . . so answer me this:
How is halo, not terrible?

I did like Halo 1 back in the days.. Probably due to playing with some great friends? But the second one was not something i spent much time on and besides that i haven't touch the game.. It really feels like a game for people around the age of 15 in my opinion.

Its a matter of opinion of opinion really, I understand that console FPS games are usually not the best and are deemed casual and that some of the levels in the original might be repetitive but personally, I always loved the games, I found them very fun, especially with friends..

The lore is another attraction for me, on the surface it can seem rather simple, but it is very well fleshed out in the EU.

The Atmosphere is also something I've always loved, that and the music make a very immersive experience in my opinion.

I can understand why some people dislike it, I know a major complaint is its slowness, I see that as a strength, but again, my opinion.

If you dislike the Halo series, that's fine, I'd like to know in more detail as to why, but I don't want to turn this completely into an argument thread, I'd rather have it sink to the bottom with no replies then turn into me trying to hopelessly defend a series that has always been a favourite of mine.

Halo is a shooter franchise. With that comes certain stigmas, it is expected for them to conform to the standard formula, the popular ideas. Some franchises break free of them. Half Life for example combines excellent linear storytelling, well designed levels, puzzles and encounters with shooter gameplay that has stuck with non regenerating health, no shields, no weapon limit etc. The old school.

Now there is a big thing Halo has achieved that everyone should give it credit for. It made shooters viable, and popular on the console. But this does not speak of it's quality, only of it's popularity and how it affected the market. When it comes to the content of Halo it has a major focus on just combat. You walk through areas and you defeat the enemies and you move on. Now that is the same as Half Life in a general sense. But Half Life is not like that in every facet. You explore a fictional world, there is dialogue, monologues, so many hundreds of tiny elements that set up this world. You enter a city in Half Life 2 and it first slowly introduces the world, making you care about it, before having you become the great hero. In halo you also have a bigger universe than halls of enemies. But for Halo it is window dressing, and in Half Life it is an integral part of the experience. It was subtle. Not as complex and deep as some other games, but subtle. And for me shooters are a waste of time if they don't have that. Because if they don't even rise to that, there's only a time wasting experience left. And that's what I found when I tried Halo 1, and I've left the franchise alone since.

Those are very good points, and you are right.

I do disagree on the whole window dressing aspect, as that is only present in the first game, the others are different to that, and the story becomes somewhat more like you described with Half Life.

Multiplayer is the most redeeming aspect of Halo to me though, and while I like the singleplayer, there are much better singleplayer games like Half Life,System-Shock 2 and Bioshock.

Custom games with friends, matchmaking (competitive multiplayer) and forge(map editor) are Halo's bread and butter.

I liked Marathon in its day, that's all I can contribute to this thread...sorry. :P

halo and later gears of war and call of duty games capitalized on what i feel made the FPS genre worthless.

they had to slow it down, and add so much fluff.

those 2 videos express my views pretty well. most people when they see video #1 think its a joke. for those of us who played when doom/ROTT/quake/unreal first came out. in the genre's heyday.

to people who think #1 is a joke, i show them #2.

skyrim did the whole "arrow to the knee" meme

call of duty? did the whole "knife to the foot" meme

i dont like halo, it is pretty decline. not really inventive weapons, and it just felt like a smaller version of Tribes 2 without what made it cool.

I find it funny how they where making fun of "Shoot enemy to kill them" in the first video.. I guess you never played doom? :D

TheWesDude.

I don't understand your point....Halo isn't as linear as majority of shooters out there (at least the first three games and ODST by Bungie, the others are shit) the levels are very big and it gives you a multitude of ways to complete a section, especially in ODST, you have an entire city to explore, with hidden caches and secrets scattered about.

I don't understand whats so bad about the slowness.

Eh, I liked original Halo. One of my favorites, years and years ago.
Never played the rest, because they were always some dumb OS/console exclusives, so fuck 'em.

Now I don't feel inclined to finish what I've started ages ago.

I still listen to the soundtrack sometimes though:

I like halo. I always liked those games with brightly colored space stations and laser beams. World needs more of those.

Anyone else think that old coin op game xenophobe would be great modernized for consoles?

Okay, I know what I said about Halo on my "Rate the Avatar Above Yours" post, but I actually like Halo: Combat Evolved. I just hate the newer ones. It was the only time the "regenerating shield" thing made sense, you get an over-shield and underneath that is your health bar.

You might like Halo:Reach and Halo:ODST then, they brought those features back.

Halo:Reach feels a lot like CE.

ODST is probably one of my favourite games, the music and atmosphere is spectacular and the characters are flamboyant (mainly because the cast is comprised of firefly actors) and well fleshed out, the film noir feel it has is definitely unique among FPS games.

Cool, seems like Bungie went back to their senses, I'll give 'em a try. Too bad Halo 4 just tried to be pretty much an over glorified COD clone. I'm happy that Bungie got to move on, probably got boring, doing the same series over and over again. Hope to see what Destiny brings in, even though I haven't been really paying attention to it. :)

I thought the first two Halos were excellent, especially when played on Legendary difficulty. While the AI being excellent is a bit overhyped, I found it to be some of the best FPS single player gaming on any medium.

Finally some one who agrees with me.

Although I thought the third game was the pinnacle of the series.

Me too. I played a fair amount of Marathon years ago.

I bought Halo, played it through once, put it away, and never thought about it again.

Marathon > Halo.

i own the first one.

played it every once in a while until it got hit with the PC bug where you could no longer install it.

havent found where they released a patch or installer to install it.

never played the 2nd one because i had XP.

and i dont own a console.

and yes, i did play doom. and even catacombs abyss 3d.
