Any Ultima fans here?

Hello all,

Next to playing games I also like to collect games, classics or simply old games which looks I like.

Over the years I have collected old PC, Amiga, a few Atari ST, and MSX games, not for the sake of value but simply because they remind me how great sometimes my memories of those earlier days were.

Anyway, to the topic.
I was wondering if there are also any Ultima fans on this forum?
I have already collected two Ultima games in the past; Worlds of Ultima Savage Empire, and Martian Dreams, and I plan to get Ultima 6 The False Prophet, and Ultima 7 complete (Black Gate, Serpent Island + expansions) in the future.

Anyone who would like to tell about their Ultima experiences?

The only Ultima games still playable beyond a novelty state is U6 and U7, U8 and U9 are both catastrophes. U4 is the father of the modern RPG and had fathered major RPG elements that you see in most RPGs today. U5 is U4 with a streamlined karma system and a more indepth plot. That's the series on the surface.

Beyond that, it's an unbelievably influential series with some of the greatest gaming moments ever. U6 has a fantastic plotline and did a lot to move gaming stories beyond simple hero fantasies (even though the Avatar did still satisfy that front).

Hello Eyenixon,

I wasn't planning on getting Ultima 8 Pagan, and Ultima 9.
Plenty of articles on Ultima fan pages that tell how awful Ultima 9 turned or the fact that the EA canceled the release of "The Lost Vale" despite that it was completed already.

The so called "Bob White" plot sounded pretty well worked out with from what I know of the lore of the series.

Gamesdomain was rather negative about the gameplay of Ultima 6, what did you think of it Eyenixon?

If I wanted to play them I guess I could try out the remakes of Ultima 5 and 6 mods that are being made for Dungeon Siege 1.

And Ultima 7 can be played with Exult.

Those two remakes are well suggested, it fixes the issue regarding the archaic gameplay of those two titles while maintaining what made them great, you should definitely give them a try.
As for U6's gameplay, the issue is that it's a bit simplistic, it's still better than most JRPGs by a mile however, turn-based with a tactical bent.

None of the Ultima games are much known for their combat however, when gameplay comes to the exploration aspect it's there the series excels as a rule. I don't need to tell you how well versed U7 is in that regard, U6 isn't as interactive and doesn't have as much to see or do, but it still has the beginnings of what made U7 great.
Also be aware that U7's combat is pretty bad, it readjusts the series from turn-based to real-time and it's rather chaotic and uncontrollable.

Hello Eyenixon,

I should look for a copy of Dungeon Siege 1 or that expanded edition on Ebay, I don't give a crap about that game's storyline/quests, but I would like to give those mods a try to see what I have missed.

A shame that they made the combat segment so chaotic in Ultima 7, that is always my worry in a real RPG; that the combat goes way to fast before I can use any kinds of attacks, spells or back up skills.

Have you considered any of the later games or the spin offs such as Ultima Underworld and Worlds of Ultima?

Ultima 4 I was in 5th grade I believe when I first played it at school and I didn't ever really know what was going on but could not get over how cool the ship's were. Ive always been way into pirates . . .

Ive played Ultima 4 and later on played & beat Ultima 8 which I was way addicted to I loved that game. Then I played Ultima Online for gawd 5 years at least, Ultima Online is the most addictive game I have ever played in my entire life. I loved that game, the first time I saw a tamer walking around with a Dragon I was like "Holysh!t that is awsome!" and then i immediatly fell in love with the first dragon that was transfered to me later on.

The last expansion I played for it was Shadows of (somthing) I forgot and had a sick pvp necro mage.

Anyway yea good times oh ive also played Ultima 9 but did not get too far into it.

Except for Ultima V, no. I know nothing about them. Sounds like some of them are good, eh?

Edit: nevermind was thinking Ultima Underworld was a different game, I would never play Underworld the only Ultima games id play right now again is Ultima 8 if I was going to play one again.
