Anyone else find computer hacking depressing?

As for taking 3 guesses and repeating, dont reload and tell me its easy.
you dont need to reload your game, just leave the terminal and start over...

and yes, hacking pisses me off. makes it feel totally fucking worthless.

but lockpicking is even fucking worse... the most irritating loss of time i've ever seen. so i just boost lockpicking to 100% and let the game take it from there.

Love using a screwdriver and bobby pin to lockpick a safe that has *gasp* a numerical keypad. Fucking annoying.

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but about five hours into playing I quite literally said "Fuck it" and used the console and "unlock" command on every lock and terminal I found. I hate minigames.

Hate.

HATE.

LEON HAET MINIGAEM. ARGLEBARGLE.

About minigames... I do not like them.

I really really do not enjoy Fallout 3's lockpicking and I completely boycott this minigame using combination: Force + load savegame in case Force didn't work.

As for hacking it's a bit better since it can at least be a bit funny [I liked playing mastermind when I was child ], but it can be annoying after some time.

I simply consider both minigames a waste of my playing time. If I would like to play game based on guessing words I would play some puzzle/logic game instead.

I agree though that it's at least nice that Fallout 3 doesn't have stupid Presuasion minigame like the one Oblivion has.

Cheating is good...

Hey, why not. You have access to the console, so it's not really cheating. Maybe a bit, but why not sure it to bypass that which you hate. Indeed, fuck it![/quote]

The minigames would be alright if they were only used on a couple of main plot-related locks/terminals, and the rest were just handled the way Fallout did it. I lockpicked maybe 4 or 5 locks before the novelty wore off, then just used unlock in the console.

Its always related to the place.

In certain areas pertaining to the main quest, yes.

Random terminals scattered all over the place? Not by a long shot. The passwords are randomly generated (i.e. pulled off a spreadsheet) every time you open the terminal.

On the surface, it looks more technical than the hacking procedure found in other FPS/RPG games.

In practice, it's just a matter of opening up the terminal several times, taking 3 guesses at a time, repeating, until you get the correct password. And most of the time, the password isn't even directly related to the place you are in or the function of the terminal. So it's not like the player could make a reasonably educated guess at what it is.

I suppose it's pretty depressing if you have no idea what you are doing. I'd say, nine times out of ten I can get the password without failing. But then again, I know what I'm doing. It's not that hard, you just gotta take your time, If it says you got 4 out of 7 right, then why are you clicking on a word that's only got 1 letter in the same place as your last guess? I think the hacking is one of the best mini-games in any game I've ever played. I love finding a terminal to hack.

I don't understand why some people go out of their way to force-lock or use an /unlock command on locked doors/containers though. The lockpick mini-game isn't hard at all and it certainly doesn't take long to do.

I must be on the wrong side of the coin, because I find the hacking to be really really easy. but the lockpicking, I never quite understood how that works. What exactly are we supposed to be doing there? I move the bobby pin around a little and then hit force and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. What's the secret to getting it to work all the time?

Difficulty has little to do with it - I found both minigames to be very easy. What pissed me off is how boring and prevalent they are, and how they render Lockpick and Science useless in this context beyond being able to attempt harder minigames. YIPPIE!

Not sure if anyone else knows about it, but if you look for symbols that are closed bracketed (specifically things like <#$%#>, (HUSTLER), and []), the either remove duds or refill your tries.
...

i was going to say the hacking mini game gives me the most satisfying moments in this game. tbh, (really) figuring out the right password hole in one is priceless, birdie is really great, and if on par, well hey at least i did it without sinking the ball

but now with these bracket parenthesis thing, :| it just took off 10 fun points from my favorite thing to do in the game

and just to add a bit here... by the time you are level 15-16, your science skill can easily be at 100, along with your main weapon type, lockpick, sneak, repair, speech, etc.

lockpicking isn't fun though, i always enjoyed much more hacking the computer that opened the door (but like i just wrote, thats not going to be as likely anymore :| )

Lol...use wasd to move the screwdriver.

AAAAaaahhhh.. cool, I'll try it next time I find a locked door, thanks for the clew. I can't believe I didn't try that.

I find the computer hacking incredibly annoying which is why, despite the overabundance of computers in 3, I still haven't hacked more than I did in Fallout 2 which really didn't have all that many.

As for the lockpicking minigame parts of it piss me off. Sometimes I'll try a place and my bobby pin will break just because it s a few cm off target, but when I accidently nudge that place again often it will owrk just fine. As someone who can lockpick IRL there are several irksome things about the design. First bobypins break way too easily. I've really ranked on some bobby pin like things while picking and I've never come close to breaking it off in the lock. The second thing is that there is no lock that I've ever encounter that will begin to turn before you successful bumped all the necessary tumbler and this will happen in game fairly often and result in frequent breakage. I also think it's kind of silly for a man with a combat shotgun in his hand to pull out a screwdriver and tiny bobbypin and go at it. You should be able to choose whether to blast or pick on at least some of the locks.

I think it's too bad they didn't add a hacking equivalent of the "Force Lock" option. When you have a high Lockpick skill, most of the easier locks can be picked by simply forcing the lock (many have a 100% chance of success when forcing the lock). It's a nice way to bypass the minigame if you want to save bobby pins or just time.

I'd like a "Force Hack" option too. I mean, why not? If you have a high Science skill, it'd be a nice way to save time. I guess the closest you can get to that is to just randomly try passwords, but it's nowhere near the same thing because you can never get a 100% chance, even with a very high Science skill.

Also, I agree they should have curtailed the minigames. Maybe make it so that you only have to do them if you're hacking the highest level terminal you're able to hack, or picking the highest level lock your level allows. So if you have a Lockpick skill of 50, you have to do the minigame for Average locks, but you automatically pick Easy and Very Easy locks.
