Anyone know what happened to recreation of Fallout 1 in Gamebryo?

Mutant Screg

Totally not a mutant
A while ago I heard of a modder or group of modders working on a project entailing the reconstruction of Fallout 1 inside of the Gamebryo engine. It was basically a massive Fallout 3 overhaul IIRC. Has there been any recent news about that? I assume the project was abandoned, but I'd just like to be sure. I'd also be interested in a file dump of any work done on the project, if such a thing exists.

Well shit. The mod looks pretty far along, a lot more developed than I expected it to be. It looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty impressive piece of work! Only thing that really annoyed me is the unimaginative scenery, the vault level design, and how travelling with a companion seems to be a bit broken. Other than that, everything is pretty well designed, and I can't even begin to imagine the amount of work poured into making everything look like its Fallout 1 counterpart.

The mod has been in development for at least 3 years and nowhere near done. It will take years and years for the full release.

If you're into social media, they do have a facebook page, and they update it regularly. It's fun to follow. Though they need to finish this before year's end, or else nobody is going to play it. Ideally it would be out before Fallout 4, but seeing as that's only a few days away, it's too little too late.

Still, it's an interesting project.

The team can take its time in my opinion, this looks a lot more interesting than Fallout 4.
I hope that when the game is released that additional locations and material can be added.

Also, the map system is pretty much what I had in mind for new Fallout games; small world spaces located over a larger map system.
I really would have liked to see this having been implemented as it allows for the usage of interesting locations without them having to occupy one large space, locations that in reality would be hours or even days of travel time separated from each other.

I know that this is pretty subjective, but I just can't wrap my head around how that mod can possibly be more interesting than Fallout 4. Fallout 4 is a new story, filled with new mechanics, characters, people, etc. Fallout 1 is an old tale that's been done to death, and no matter what that dev team does to restore the game, it will still taste a bit stale.

I only hope the mod team won't say "we're going to port the mod to FO4's creation engine."

I don't really see the point of the mod either except as a nice to look at themepark. Everything in Fallout 1 was built around that engine and porting it to Fallout 3/NV's engine is like trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole.

I think you can rest easy, my friend. They've already done too much work using the Gamebryo engine at this point, and I don't think they would want to start over from scratch.

... Really? The new power armor and deathclaw animations aren't at least as interesting as a remake of F1 in the dated gamebryo engine?

I mean, I know we all hate Bethesda here... but that's pushing it, man.

You say that, but then you realize they have reduced the available player dialogue options to 4, of which all of them are short sentences robbed of all personality. So they're really making Fallout Tactics 2. I'm sure Fallout 4 looks fantastic if you like shooting things, but it's not the same genre as the old games anymore, so it's not a reasonable comparison.

Good point Magnus... but for each conversation branch in F1/F2, does it average more than 4 options? If so, then by how much?

I would assume it's higher, but whether by enough is up to debate.

The number of branches aren't that important, honestly I think 4 is usually enough. What you won't see in Fallout 4 however is dialogue that goes like:
"Jules, have you seen my car? I parked it here a while ago, and now it's gone."
"Your CAR? You sure you parked it here? I ain't seen it."
"You SURE you haven't seen it, Jules?"
"Naw, brother, I ain't seen it. I'll keep an eye out for it, though. (Shrugs.) Still, Reno's a big place..."
"Jules, I have this crazy HUNCH you know where my car went. If you don't tell me where it is, I'll use you for target practice. Now talk."
"Brother, I don't know NOTHING about your car. I AIN'T seen what happened to it, and I DON'T know where it is. (He throws a hateful glance at Cody across the street.)"
"Really? That sounds like a load of SHIT to me."
"All right, brother, all right! ...I seen some guys take the car not long ago. But there were too many of them for me to stop, y'know, and --"
"Shut up and take me where they went. Now."
"Okay, okay..."
"By the way... Jules? If you so much as GLANCE the wrong way at that kid across the street, I'll come back and kill you so many times you'll need multiple wills. Understand? Now lead on."

Animations get old fast. At least for me, the first time I see an awesome animation is "WOOOOOOOOOOW, THIS IS GREAT". Later, I just want to skip them and resume my playing.
As long as it is well adapted, I'd probably prefer the Gamebryo version of Fallout 1 to anything that abuses cinematics constantly. Hell, I prefer Fallout 3 to anything that has a cinematic for everything.
