Oh it is! I know someone with DSL in Canada who gets something like 3 mbps for only $60. Compare that to 256kbps at $50/month.

My cable doesn't work that way. It's not shared at all. It's 640 kbit (yes, I know it's not much, but you can get over 70 kbytes/sec download which is enough), regardless of the time and amount of users in the area. It's not shared bandwidth, and it works at max speed 99% of the time.
This also makes it better to play games online. Shared bandwidth tends to have small lag pockets and glitches when multiple users are on it at the same time as you're playing. I never have that problem.

I'm inclined to believe your area just doesn't have many cablemodem users on at once. You should also be getting better speeds than that if you're running at 100% efficiency.

RE: DSL?! CABLE?!

hehe I just spent all my money on a geforce2. Maybe another time thedl speeds are pretty good at ~5k/s games are bad though.

Well, there are some places that get shitty connections, what province is he in? My town's DSL gets really good connections, I know 2 people with it, and they say that they have nothing to complain about.

I think it was Ontario... Or was it BC.. can't really remember.

Yeah it really depends on the ISP. One problem is that WinModems depend on using the CPU instead of the modem to do the work.

Plus they don't work with DOS or Linux games.

My guess would be Ontario, most populated province in Canada, so it would end in slower rates.

It doesn't depend on the area. I live in a suburb just outside Stockholm. This ISP offers cable almost all over the city. It's exactly the same everywhere in Stockholm, regardless if they live in a big apartment building with tons of users. It's the same speed 24/7.

Well I guess you never have enough speed... and I'm sure it *could* be faster, but the limit is 640k and it NEVER goes over it, and always works at that speed (if you find a server equally fast, that is).

RE: DSL?! CABLE?!

I have a dial-up cable, how about that ?
No, that's not an error. My provider uses an old, obsolete technology. I have a thingy they call a "cable-modem" wich dials a 4 (I don't know if it sends an actual 4 through the cable, or if the comupter sends a 4 to the modem, witch uses it as a signal to seek contact with the server). It's connected though a COM port with the computer, and windows thinks it is a standard 28K8 modem.
Not only has it a speed limit of 115200 bps (because a COM port just can't go faster than that), the provider is so slow I could "race" an 56K6 modem and lose. I wish my computer was the bottleneck.
Man, I hate monopolies.

115200 (115.2kbps) sure looks like a lot but it really isn't. The rating of 115.2k is the maximum compressed data rating your modem can get, usually text. I remember being fooled by that rating.

Yeah, I know. My ISP has also the plus and premium packages for "professional users". They promise 256 kbps and 512 kbps downstream speeds for it. Of course, they aren't available where I live, but if they were, I'd like to see them first. And if they would be that fast (on, say, an nearby server), then the rest of the internet (of wich most parts aren't so speedy), would slow be down anyway.
Basically, I'm stuck with a slow connection forever.

RE: DSL?! CABLE?!

plus the only real Hard modem is USR. Don't get yourself shits with Rocwell chipsets. Too bad and trully, each one wastes CPU time...

USR Power! Which version do you have? Sportster or Courier? I have (if I remember correctly) a Sportster 56k Fax Voice Modem. I got a $50 rebate off of it, but if I remember right, by some error I got a total of $100 off it.
