arcanum help

hey, i was curious, my computer runs the arcanum demo pretty good, but whenever i go into any town it chops up pretty bad... i got a pentium II 266, 96 megs ram... would it be a waste of time and money to buy the real game, or can you do anything to make it run faster? ho hum.....

a few things..

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Sep-01-01 AT 06:34AM (GMT)[p]A fast hard-drive is definitely what you need. Your memory should be enough, though I'm recommending you give it a few sticks more into 128megs. Processor? 266Mhz doesn't cut it anymore.. but as long as it supports DirectX8, you're fine.

Hard disk.. aye, that's the rub! How much is a 20 gig hard drive? I've timed it, and in a drive with 5Mbps throughput, initial load times takes at most thirty seconds, and in-game loads time will never go past fifteen seconds. In such a LARGE game as this one, those are very good!

Of course, there might be a slow-down sometimes, don't worry about it. Every big game suffers from this, no matter how fast the system. It's barely noticable, anyhoo..

On a side note, I can sympathize with what you're feeling. Some time ago, I kept on playing Fallout2 on a 486DX with 24 megs o' ram. Playable, it was. I had to wait almost a minute between screens, though.. but it was worth it.

A faster hard drive soon got rid of that problem. See now, eh?

RE: a few things..

right now i have a 6 gig hard drive :( parents much to cheap to get me anything else... *sigh* i need a job

i feel sorry for you, my broken 486 can only run games like wolfinstien... and even then its choppy =]

so your saying getting better hard disk = faster arcanum? hehe, try and say things in the most simple terms, im not really the techie type =]

RE: a few things..

Heh. I've got a Duron 800 mhz with 256 meg ram plus 32 meg on a savage 3 3-d graphics card and I STILL have to wait 3-4 secs everytime I go into combat. Apparently, I have to wait whenever someone uses a fancy spell. I figure the game has to load up the fancy effects before it can show them. Damned annoying though :(

But.... The big cities do chop up a bit. Particularly when you've just entered them. Tarant was my slowest. Whenever I arrived I just waited a few secs before walking anywhere and it seemed to perform a bit better. Still had to load somethings though, like when I walked past a person. Damned persons...
