After you find out you need to go to Caladon you can ask any ship's captain to take you there.

also, ive found the schematic for the ancien pistol (on island of despair) and i have both materials needed but it wont let me combine them. what gives?

It has to do with your level in Gunsmithy as well as your intelligence. Just buy a couple of gunsmithy books in Tarant (the university court library I think), and you can build the items without actually having the skill.

Just follow the main storyline. At some point you discover you have to go to Caladon and from that moment you can ask any ships captain to take you there.
