For those who have not seen them, and want to know what the fuss is about-

here's a look of the Aurora Borealis. Some pics and a discussion of NPR.org.

Hey it's one of the seven natural wonders of the world-

Remember, the film Frequency taught us that the Aurora Borealis will allow HAM radios to speak through time.

Really though, has anyone not seen pictures or video of the Aurora Borealis? It's hard for me to think that anyone could be that cocooned (at least, anyone with a connection to the internet).

I was told the Aurora Borealis would be visible in my area a few days ago! Unfortunately I had work the next day at 6:45pm so I couldnt stay up to see it...

Ive always wanted to see it too...it occasionally can be seen farther south under the right conditions. If your in the arctic though its there every night.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Damn, it's times like these I wish I didn't live in Texas. Mad props to Welsh for posting, though.

You need something like this to make you wish you didn't live in Texas?

I lived in El Paso Texas for 7 years, have driven all over the state and I never really want to go back. San Antonio maybe, but nowhere else.

And hey, El Paso is technically Texas!

Hey it's one of the seven natural wonders of the world-

What's to wonder about it? It has been scientifically explained.

won·der ( P ) n.

1)
1. One that arouses awe, astonishment, surprise, or admiration; a marvel: “The decision of one age or country is a wonder to another” (John Stuart Mill).
2. The emotion aroused by something awe-inspiring, astounding, or marvelous: gazed with wonder at the northern lights.
2) An event inexplicable by the laws of nature; a miracle.
3) A feeling of puzzlement or doubt.
4) often Wonder A monumental human creation regarded with awe, especially one of seven monuments of the ancient world that appeared on various lists of late antiquity.

I've always wanted to see the northern lights. The only thing we Australian's see is the Southern Cross... How exciting!

Wake Up Call

Wake Up Call

Thanks for the " heads up" about the planet's seasonal changes.

Might be a hole in the cloud cover tonight.

Recent - Time Change - back to E.S.Time had early-early rising as side effect. Will get over this. Next big arctic air mass provided clearest Ohio sky in short term memory.

As clear and dry a sky as any I can remember when "up" north/northwest.

Was surprised where Orion's Belt had 'moved'.
Dizzied by the actual spacial relationship. It was this Earth's movement about that fusion gas bag just below the horizon, rather than the migration of distant stars.

Saw loose alignment of crescent moon and two planets to the east and south, another trick of space and time that was enhanced by the discrete contrails of jets heading to east, west, and the big airport off the beltway.

Thanks for this reminder.

While the northern lights are cool to look at, I stand by my firm belief that living in alaska sucks. Despite what colt may say otherwise. He doesnt live in fairbanks.

Once Again, Northern lights = cool to look at

Alaska = Teh Suck.

Heh...the "This White Shit Sucks" phase all cheechakos go through.

If you think it's bad now, just wait until the REALLY REALLY COOL effect with Alaskan nights, the snow, and holiday lights, etc. is taken away and the state feels like a frozen wasteland in January. :)

Then I will definitely agree that the Interior and North Slope both suck. :)

SO I guess you don't like New Orleans then?

Which would be kind of stupid since New Orleans is so cool.

But yes, I think Alaska has to be one of those nice places to visit, in the right time of the year, but I wouldn't want to live there. Sorry Colt. That said, you can see the Northern Lights from other, more enjoyable place.

Like Iceland- a land of hot viking chicks.
such as-

http://www.icelandicmodels.is/ICELANDICMODELS/Models/Asdis/view.aspx?.

Or Scotland! WHich is a good place to drink beer and see the northern lights.

Or up in Scandinavia

Ok, so maybe some of you are jaded, cynical, been-there-done-that, types who have lost all appreciate your the remarkable beauty of the world and want to advertise that fact. Go you!
Now go crawl back under your rock.

Ben in fairbanks for 2 years now... was in the field sleeping in a tent at -50 degrees farenheit last year..... I can honestly say that central alaska sucks...

The summer is nice, bright sunny day, for most of the summer... great for getting drunk, going to the golf course and hitting golf balls at eachother for a few hours around 3 in the morning.

But once summer's over, both weeks of it.... it's back to winter... and cold, and snow, and darkness... And the fact that my duty uniform right now is Desert BDU's and Desert Flight Suits.... Ohh yeah... Extreme Hot Weather Gear SHOULD NOT EVER BE WORN IN NOVEMBER IN ALASKA.

I'll... I'll kill you all! *does so* Feel better now.

I'll have to agree that the one time I visited Fairbanks, I didn't want to go back. Anchorage is about the only place in Alaska I would like to live. Otherwise you're stuck in some little corner with everything being flown in and the most exciting thing of the day is that the village cops aren't allowed firearms.

Anyway, clear skies and warm beaches, Elissar. - Colt

We get that in Canada too.
And white shit DO suck!
We got our fist snowfall in montreal last week...thankfully nothing stayed on the ground...for now.

Really? We had our first snowfall a few days ago, an inch deep where I am at. Mostly melted off, though there are still patches on the ground.
