>yeah, but what's so funny about

I've been asking myself that very question. I usually like Penny Arcade, but this sure isn't one of my favorites. Maybe it's one of those things you only understand when you play Tribes...

I don't play tribes, but, having been completely obsessed with Counter-Strike for a year and a half, I certainly understand.

RE: ....

When you're really serious about a game like Tribes or Counterstrike, you stick with it even when it puts you through a lot of hassle. I went through my Voodoo 3 ordeal for CS and a similar, but less frustrating, ordeal with a soundcard. On top of that, I've reinstalled Half-Life and CS numerous times to try to fix problems. To a casual gamer, it's not worth it, but a really pathetic gamer like myself will go to ludicrous lengths for the game. I thought the comic had made that pretty clear, but not clear enough, apparently.

Oh... so that's the meaning of it....

Seriously, if you cared that much for it I expected you would've bought some better hardware, I mean c'mon, Voodoo 3? That's like 1998 technology. Even my archaic ATI Rage 128 is better than that. You're fighting a battle you've already lost.

RE: ....

I simply don't have the money. Besides, I'm back to me old V2, anyway. I never did get the Voodoo3 to work. I think it probably had something to do with my on-board video which wouldn't shut off no matter what I did, because my brother got the card working fine in his computer. Whatever.

"You're fighting a battle you've already lost."

What? Playing de_survivor or de_dust might not be as much fun as being able to play maps like de_torn or the ludicrously complex de_storm, but it's plenty for me. The small pool of maps that run well on my system tend to be the better balanced and more often played maps, anyway.

RE: V3

I`m stuck with my old V3 until December, so maybe i can help:

-Install V3 with the last drivers, just those, try to find them in the net

-use directx8.a, but you`ll never get good directx gaming(except for old Dx7 games), for opengl things will work fine, except probably with Quake3.

-that geometry thingy on the voodoo control panel really speeds CS

-turn off the inboard graphics in the Bios, and check for the latest Bios. You may also have to uncheck a video...something in the bios that doesn`t relate to the inboard chip (it has been a while since i mess with those things, sorry9

-In CS and UT V3`s are fine, for the rest even Xotor`s Riva would work better, probably.

-V3 loves Fallout! Try to play FO1 with 64 or 128megs of ram and a v3, it´s like a dream come true :)

Unless you don't live in USA, you really don't have an excuse. I mean, you can get a GeForce2 MX 400 w/64megs of RAM for less than $60. That's about the price of your game when it came out. Hell, if you're planning on buying one of the new consoles, the games cost around that much too.

I don't know how you can seriously call yourself a 3D gamer if you're not willing to spend a relatively small amount of money for better hardware. I don't think that cartoon can even really apply to you Doyle, it doesn't seem like you're that into it.

RE: V3

Yep Xotor, i could get those things at that price too (actually i could get 128 meg and mx400) but i have all my money stuck in a deal to buy a house that is proving to be a nerve wreck :(
I`ll try to get that in christhmas

How is the monitor thing Doyle?

RE: V3

You know, Xotor, I'm not into hardcore 3d gaming. I'm into hardcore Counterstrike. Though you might not realize it, Counterstrike is a free mod of a game that's several years old. It's not like I need a GeForce2 MX400 and dual 1GHz Athlons to play the game. The simple fact is that for most maps, my K62 500 and my single V2-1000 are adequate; it's only the most recent maps that are unplayable, and not even all of them at that.

That being said, why would that comic not apply to me? I've invested hundreds, if not thousands, of hours simply playing the game and I've gone through a fair bit of hassle, including my upgrade from a P233 to my K62. Does it really matter that I have an archaic video card? Do I have to have the latest hardware to be a hardcore gamer? If don't have quality hardware, does that mean I can't be a hardcore gamer?

Xotor, lately it feels like you've been hassling me just for the sake of it. You certainly don't have any grounds to attack me in this instance (You don't even know me, bastard), and other recent posts have seemed overly hostile. I'd really appreciate if you'd go right out and tell me if you have a problem with me; if you don't, then hold your tongue in the future and think before you post.

RE: V3

"How is the monitor thing Doyle?"

In the sense that I have a monitor, good. In the sense that I'm using the same old, shitty, dark Proview monitor ("Why you want driver? Buy new product! We have digital monitor! You like?"), then it's going rather poorly.

In anticipation of Xotor's response: I would but I don't have the money.

I just connotate "hardcore gamer" with someone who is willing to invest money into the hobbie they spent a great deal of time with. I don't see you as a "true" hardcore gamer for that fact.

It is like claiming to be an audiophile when your listening equipment is a Soundblaster Pro and some desktop speakers. It doesn't add up.

What? You must be seeing something I'm not because I just scrolled through the past PAGE of topics in this forum and none of them, with exception to maybe (and it is really stretching it) where I mentioned something on the Starwars and games Lucas Arts is making.

RE: V3

how much money someone spends on games doesnt make them a 'hardcore' gamer

i would have top of the line stuff if i COULD afford it, but i cant...

its the hours you spend addicted to games taht makes you 'hardcore'

and its not impossible to enjoy music with crappy speakers either..

"I just connotate "hardcore gamer" with someone who is willing to invest money into the hobbie they spent a great deal of time with. I don't see you as a "true" hardcore gamer for that fact."

How do you know I haven't spent money on it? Seriously, you ASSume way too much.

The simple fact is that I [em]have[/em] spent money on it. This computer (Though I hardly think they're the same computer, at this point) originally started as a HP Pavilion 233. It had 32Mb of RAM, a 2 Gig HD, onboard sound and a crappy 1Mb onboard video card. Since then, I've personally purchased:

A Voodoo 2
96Mb of RAM
An 8.4Gb HD
A 400MHz upgrade that didn't work and couldn't be returned
A new motherboard
A K62 500 processor
A new mid-tower case
A CD-ROM Drive
A shitty Creative soundcard
A Voodoo 3 that didn't work and couldn't be returned

It may not be much, but I've spent hundreds on this piece of crap I've never had so much as a part-time job at McDonald's. I don't know what you do for a living, how much you make, or why you think you're an expert on gaming, but I really don't see how you can arbitrarily decide whether someone is a "hardcore" gamer without knowing a damn thing about him or the system he plays on.

As for my other statement, I think I confused you with someone on another message board, and I do apologize for that.
