Bamboo lightsaber prop.

PsychoSniper

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
Heres the saber hilt prop I made out of a peice of bamboo.

The first stage I did was a large handed hilt, a switch, which I added by precisley cutting a rectangular notch out that it slid into, and a grip with some string wrapped tightly arund it/glued in place.

However, I wasnt entirely satisfied with it that long.

I shortend it.

From there, I replaced the string that was the grip with twine, so it'd be a unform color and blend with the appernce of the bamboo better.
Also, I added a bolt to the bottom for a clip, and took an old focusing lens from a broken old rifle scope and put that in the top as the emiter, and added a knob from a broken watch as a second settings dial below the main switch.

So, comments ?

EDIT- removed the pics, since theyre dead links now due to a photobucket server crash (and some used same link as new pics, which would have fosterd confusion....)

Im going to eventualy do a little more, once I have time and find a laser diode in some local electronics store, Im considering sticking it into the hild and wiring it up thru the switch.

That, and I plan to eventualy redo the grip with more twine, but braid it first for a more textured grip.

The only problem with twine is it has to be wrapped real tight, and even then slips some.

The solution is to coat it in super glue, which soaks into it and makes it quite rigit, perfect forh te grip.

You can also shellac or polyurethane the rope. These will both make it more sticky. In addition, you can probably mix some color into polyurethane to colorize the hilt, if you want.

I can't believe I'm giving advice on how to make a more realistic lightsaber.

What are you going to add for the beam part?

Or is it just supposed to be on "off" mode the whole time?

Just add a lazer beam made of bamboo and you´re all set :)

Seriously tho, the switch looks cheaper than a crack whore to say the least - - and rest of the hilt.. We´ll, let´s just say I don´t understand what you´re going for there . . ;) but it´s far from being finished, right..?

Oh, and you do have one seriously hairy arm - scary man, fo real

Meh, Ive legpresed 1200+ lbs before, so the jokes bout strong guys being hairy are true :p

and yes, it's far from finished. Though I dont plan to have a 'blade'. It's a hilt only.

Eventualy, I'll cover the switch's metal componets so it blends in better (proably witn a bamboo sawdust/glue paste so it blends in better) and do other cosmetic changes. But Im going to leave it alone for now, so it can be removed easily if nessacary (it's simply being held in place by friction currently, since I cut a notch that exactly fit it.)

For the emiter, I'll try to find something better to fit inside it, but for now I have a peice of the optics from a broken rifle scope sitting mounted down in there so you see something glassy and emiter lens like when you look down the top.

Ok, Ive done some more.

I added a better clip as well as hid the metal in the switch.

Here you see it hanging on the new clip.

Here you see a closeup of the new look of the switch area.

I tightly wraped the twine around the switch area then glued it in place. Once it dried, I cut out the section covering the switch, then reinforced the cut area with more glue.

I also cut into the twine around the switch makling it easier to hit. It's not hard to hit, but I wanted it more accesible, and with the way it is now, it's hard to bump acadently (and harder to turn off due to the angle of the cut into the twine.)

Here you see the new clip. It can be easily attacked to many things, for veritility, and doesnt easily get knocked off, though a good tug will pull it off.

My respect goes out to anyone daring enough to make something like that whether it looks good or not.

Amazingly enough it looks great! I like the bamboo idea as one person said Jedi's made their own lightsabers and so anyone living in a secluded area perhaps for meditation and training would obviously do something like that.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

So a keyring-alligator clip attached to a metal- ball string? Cool.

How easy is it to quickly remove?

How much does it weigh? I ask because if it is as light as it looks, it will flop around alot more than a lightsaber 'should' when walking around. I envision a heftier piece, what with being metal and all.

Perhaps you could place some lead slugs in the hilt, in order to balance and weight it down. Can you still access the hollowness of the bamboo through the 'business end'?

I remember from one of the Star Wars novels I used to read in middle school that one of the Jedi Academies had a lightsabre with the switch inside as a test to see who could use the force enough to figure out how to turn it on. Mebbe you could imagine that the switch is inside too?

Also, that diagonally-slanted cut you made where the beam comes out just looks weird to me.

Vault Dwller, thanks.

Murdoch, lightsabers are supposed to be light anway, and no I cant currently go in thru the busness end. As seen in some of the older pics I have a peice of the optics from a broken scope in it as the 'emiter'. And it's easy to remove from the clip, just give a good firm tug.

Ozrat, that 'academy' was a bad guy that kidnaped kids for his own private jedi army. He ran into a problem when the force was blocked off. Suddenly they had dead weapons. And why would I imagine a switch, theres allready one there.

Ok, Ive done some more changes on it........ and Ill repost the old pics too since a photobucket server crash wiped the old pics out.

Glancing over this thread, you never really answered why you decided to do this PsychoSniper. Especially with such out-of-place materials.

If you showed me such an apparatus without mentioning what it was, I'm sure I would never guess that it is a recreation of a light saber.

I was bored when I first did it, it was from a peice of bambii from an old walking stick, IIRC it had cracked, so I was going to junk it.

Then I got the idea to make it a saber hilt instead.

Each Jedi was supposed to make his own lightsaber out of materials that would represent him. Maybe PsychoSniper lives in a bamboo hut in Georgia. - Colt
