Best games for 2009

Well I don't get the fuzz, I am a huge fan of D1, but D3 doesn't look much better than Titan Quest, so why the hype? Because of the great gameplay? I know it will sell well thanks to lots of (viral) marketing, but I don't get why people are so anxious to get it.
Besides: Whats taking them so long?

the looks of Titan Quest are just fine for a hack & slash, Roflcore. what's your point with saying D3 looks outdated?

it's not some flashy FPS whose primary selling point is that the bling bling on screen shows you just how beautiful your graphics card can render stuff.

what's the hype? well, it's only the sequel of two hugely popular games. though i must say i'm still skeptical about the game (and mechanics), i'm sure to give them a chance.

as for what's taking them so long? pfft, seriously... all goddamn games nowadays are sloppy and rushed. don't start whining for those few developers who take their time. (though i'm not saying D3 won't have bugs and won't have sloppy areas mind you!)

Well, it WILL sell like hotcakes, due to popularity of previous titles. Still, like SuAside noted, Diablo titles are somewhat of an oxymoron, being action games that do not rely on shiny gfx. I personally never understood why the people would enjoy the mindless clickfest when it doesn't even have decent gfx (even for the time), but well, whatever people are into.

I'm optimistic about Alpha Protocol. I'm thinking Obsidian will do much better with an original IP than they did with their other titles (which I liked as well). Even if the shooter / rpg hybrid isn't your thing, the characters and story may make it worth it.

That and Age of Decadence are all I'm really looking forward to.

And Diablo 3 will sell like madness. D2 + LoD still goes for 40 bucks retail, that's the same as NWN 2 + MotB. And come on, none of the Diablos including 3 from what we've seen have junk graphics. I always thought the monsters, spell effects, and environments looked great. Some just prefer art to bloom I guess.

I think the reason people are hyped about it is because since D2 we've seen scads of clones and none of them even come close to competing. D3 should be able to top it IMO.

Min/maxing paradise, it's for stat junkies and those with build obsession.
There's more to it than just clicking, and Diablo 2 in hell mode requires more coordination and skill (especially in developing a character properly) than most RPGs today.

It's the possibilities, if you look at it as just clicking and an action game you're cheating yourself, it's a game of math and of preparation, not mindless twiddling.

"Most RPGs today" is not much of a comparison, really.

Most MMOs these days require some thought about developing the character properly. Does that make them intricate and complex?

Plus, 70% of the game, at least, is still about grinding. Sure you choose the skills and stuff, but that's the same as in many other action games. In any case, it's about how you present is, but I personally find nothing there to glorify. Diablo was primarily popular because of its online play, in essence the predecessor of MMOs. You could try to show the complexity of Diablo with the same success as to argue the complexity of WoW.

Or if you believe there is any kind of math required behind the power gaming that is Diablo then you're not only cheating yourself, you're also licking your own balls.

Mass Effect 2 teaser is up on gametrailers. I can't help but feel excited, I'm just not sure if it'll come this year.
