So I’ve decided to start up New Vegas again, I haven’t played it since I made an account here and since then I’ve learned that New Vegas mods have actually come a long way. I haven’t really kept up with the modding scene for almost a decade now, so I’m wondering if you guys have suggestions for the best New Vegas mods as of 2020. I’m still using the likes of Project Nevada and WMX, but apparently there are better mods now? Is EVE still a good one, or has another mod surpassed? I’d really appreciate some input from you guys, as I’m too lazy to spend the time surfing the nexus and testing mods.

Thank you so much! Interesting to see FOOK on your list, I haven’t used that in a long time.

There’s a couple of things that Project Nevada does that I like in particular. The ability to configure game settings like how much health you get per level, how much skill affects weapon damage, crippled leg walking speed and things like that. Do any of the mods you listed allow you to change stuff like that?

Also, I believe that Project Nevada created some kind of script that makes it so DT from helmets only protects the head, and DT from body armor doesn’t protect the head. So if someone is wearing power armor without a helmet, headshotting them will not be protected by the armor. Is there another mod that does this?

So far I haven't been able to find any such mods that add that but I will look around and let you know what I find. I do know that lStewies Tweaks adds a lot of stuff you can tweak into the game. He added a lot of stuff as you can see from his mod page.

IIRC, that doesn't work and just keeps running scripts until the game gets super laggy.

I will add several suggestions to improve performance:
  • FNV Mod Limit Fix (improves performance even if you don't use lots of mods)
  • New Vegas Heap Replacer (tries to fix the horrible FNV's Engine Heap Allocation, improves performance when opening containers with a lot of items and with long playing sessions)
  • JohnnyGuitar NVSE (just like JIPLN, it's a script extender plugin with new functions required by some mods, it also has some game engine fixes)
  • xNVSE (instead of the old NVSE)

Oh, I didn’t know that. I guess I’ll just have to deal with helmet-less enemies tanking rounds to the head.

Thanks for your suggestions, I haven’t used any of those mods before. I didn’t even know there was a new NVSE.

Viva New Vegas guide got a list of cool mods updated as recent as this month, but that was before the guide's author decided to completely overhaul his/her guide and made it so it's as friendly as it could for low-end PCs.

Okay, one last question for you guys. Does anyone know of a mod that modifies skill-based damage? As in, a gun will do the same damage regardless of you guns skill? Project Nevada had an option for this but I can’t seem to find a mod that does this. I really hate how being better at shooting guns makes your bullets hurt more, I prefer skill to affect gun wobble and stuff like that.

Edit: After playing for a bit I’ve realized that skill and weapon condition really don’t affect damage that much, if at all. I sometimes forget how much stuff they fixed from fallout 3.

A must have mods for New Vegas is some kind of Slower level mod. It should extend the xp threshold to level up (so you dont need to mess with quest xp or kill xp).

Playing FNV at lower level feel really different. You will use weapons you normally dont bother (like grenades). And the game practically encourage you to go straight from Goodspring along the way as fast as possible to new vegas, because even outside of Vegas there's lot of low level enemies.
