Best weapon for each NPC? (FO1)

Would it be best to give Ian and Tycho a sniper rifle? It says Ian is good with pistols yet a sniper rifle is considered a small gun. So am I correct in assuming Ian will handle a sniper rifle just as well as a pistol? And what about the energy pistols, even though they are classified as energy weapons?

Have you even tried to do so? I think not. 'Cause if you had, you wouldn't ask these questions.

NPCs can only use those weapons for which they have animation frames. That means Ian will have to do with pistols (14mm, .223), knives (Ripper as well 'cause same animation frame), SMG or Power Fist, but he can't handle rifles. Tycho does have the rifle animation so give him a Sniper Rifle or the LE BB gun you find in the Car Mart special encounter. AFAIK none of the NPCs can use Energy Weapons. The animation frame for laser pistol might be the same as for pistol but they are not proficient with it, so don't give one to Ian 'cause he's clumsy as is.

You could also just ask your NPCs what they are proficient with. That question is there for a reason, you know?

But if you install the Fallout Update Mod" v1.2.5 for example (new quests, characters, possibility of NPCs wearing armors), Ian, Tycho and Katja can use a sniper rifle when they wear an armor for which the animation frames have been done. For example, in my game, I gave a power armor to Ian and a sniper rifle as his selected weapon... it worked fine, but I gotta say that Ian isn't as good as Tycho with this type of gun.

Better yet, play the v1.0 and get those weapons multiplied then hand them over to each NPC and even yourself, should you prefer that. Or use an inventory editor if such is available for FO1.
 
It sort of sucks not knowing how proficient the NPC is with each type of weapon. Also, when I can't carry more items, Tycho ends up using a plasma rifle and ian a stupid knife :-)

Didn't pay much attention to Tycho's proficiency with it.
 
I noticed it doesn't have their AP values, which might be of interest. Ian has 10, Tycho 8 and Katja 9, IIRC. No idea about Dogmeat, 12 maybe?

I'm curious what weapon people give Katja in FO1. Ian is the natural carrier of the .223 pistol, and the 14mm is rather lackluster in comparison. Which leaves a ripper or power fist. The fist is the clear winner when it comes to dps (dpr, rather), but the ripper's knockback means friendly fire is a bit less of a worry, and it can also come in handy vs melee opponents.

Opinions?

Iwould've liked to make this a poll in a new thread, but I wasn't sure how to do that, or if it's at all possible on this forum.
