Bethesda has opened a blog, with a few messages on it, the most interesting being Emil Pagliarulo answering a few meet the devs questions:<blockquote>What have you drawn on for inspiration in developing Fallout 3? Books, movies, music, etc would be fine, if you don’t want to name any games.

When we first started working on Fallout 3, I completely overloaded my system with post-apocalyptic films. I’m not just talking “Mad Max” and “A Boy and His Dog” here - I’m referring to some of the most depressing movies I’ve even seen in my life. “The Day After,” “Testament,” “When the Wind Blows.” Stuff like that. Fun! I was pulled back from the brink of suicide with a lot of great 50’s sci-fi flicks, like “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and “Forbidden Planet.”

I tend to draw inspiration from a variety of sources, though. The amazing characters from a TV show like “Deadwood,” the strong themes of great classic literature like “A Tale of Two Cities,” maybe the subtle irony in an old Billie Holiday song. It goes beyond just playing the old Fallout games - it’s whatever moves me on a personal level.

How long have you been playing Fallout, and how would you describe your feelings towards the franchise?

My love for Fallout goes back to Wasteland, which was one of the first computer games I ever played, back on my Commodore 64. That’s kind of ironic, considering I didn’t play Fallout when it first came out. It took a friend and colleague of mine (Jordan Thomas, now a designer, whom I worked with at the Adrenaline Vault website back in the day) actually mailing me his copy for me to realize what I had been missing.

As much as I loved the characters and open-ended gameplay, it was really the richness of the fictional world I found so compelling. It would have been so easy for Fallout’s creators to simply make a post-apocalyptic game, set in contemporary America. Instead, they split the timeline after World War II and created an alternate America, a Walt Disney Tomorrow-Land of robots and nuclear-powered cars. It was the ultimate American future - and they blew it all to hell. Brilliant doesn’t even begin to describe that premise.

Have you played the VanBuren Alpha? If so, what were your feelings on it?

Actually, I haven’t played the Van Buren Alpha. Yet. Part of me is, of course, incredibly curious about the game. But another part of me feels like I need to keep my distance. I want to respect Van Buren for what it was, and continue with “our” Fallout 3. But ah, who am I kidding. I know I’ll play it sooner or later.</blockquote>Link: Unofficial Bethesda Blog.

"Meet Emil Pagliarulo"

"1) What’s your job at Bethesda?

I’m the lead designer of Fallout 3."

Well, now we have a face and name for "MrSmileyFaceDude".

Steve "MrSmileyFaceDude" Meister is not the lead designer, he's a programmer (I think, I forgot). Emil "Lohan" Pagliarulo is the lead designer.

Oh right. He was lead-something.

Be it wheter Programmer or Designer, I forget.

But if Emil is the lead designer, that means he's somewhat (or maybe fully) responsible for the monstrosity known as the handheld nuclear catapult.. :?

He's part responsible for all the monstrosities?

Full? Hell no, that's not how Bethesda works, you can't let a lead designer make important decisions about <s>money</s>games.

Todd Howard, the executive producer, has the final call on all decisions.

I'd say that Emil is probably the one guy who gave me some hope for this game. Thief is an excellent game/idea, and for what it's worth, the Dark Brotherhood questline was the best part of Oblivion.

Still, that hope kinda disappeared with the GI article.

Anyways, I wonder if we'll see something truly interesting on this blog. I wouldn't bet on it, I think it'll be the "casual" kinda information like what we see in the Meet the devs threads.

There's probably a really good reason that Bethesda/GI wanted their article scans pulled from this site, and it's to hide their failure to avoid any un-necessary information spreading to new minds. How can they reap in profit if everyone knows what Fallout 3 is going to be like?

As for Emil, he seems like a pretty nice guy, but as Kharn mentioned - Howard gets the final say and what I've learned of him thusfar, that's very bad. :(

Funny they weren't in Fallout games I played...

If you put Micro Fusion Cells in your car, it's nuclear-powered.

If you put Small Energy Cells in your car, it's battery-powered.

Still, nuclear-powered car.

Oops.I thought he was talking about those cars with mini nuclear power plant inside that will go BOOM when you scratch them with a bullet. My mistake…

Best way to describe fallout, no doubt... Fallout 3 is SURELY in good hands, and don't you dare NMA rabid "fans" to say otherwise. And you have NO reason to doubt their skills in RPG's. Look at their past!

Best way  ahah, let's see who falls for this one

Hi guys,

I still don't get why to call something with fusion power nuclear.
I thought it's an alternative word for fission reaction.

Clearly, both fusion and fission reaction is nuclear in nature, but for some (probably historical?) reasons I never heard fusion referred to as 'nuclear'.

Anyways, thans for the news.

That's because fusion reactions are extremely hard (almost impossible so far, in fact) to create stably and hence get mentioned a lot less than fission reactions. A fusion reaction is still a nuclear reaction and is still referred to as a nuclear reaction.

Hell, even radioactive decay and particle acceleration are nuclear reactions. "Nuclear" just means "anything that affects the nucleus" of an atom.

The full term is "nuclear fusion".

Wikipedia and Google exist.
