Bethesda pencils in new Elder Scrolls

Consider it unconfirmed, but from GI.<blockquote>"At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010," said Oughton.</blockquote>Slip of the tongue from Oughton, but if it's true it is of interest to us because it means TES V has probably been in production for some time now and might well use GameBryo again - 2 years being a relatively short cycle for Bethesda. Also, hopefully it means no Fallout 4 before that time.

Well, who knows, maybe Gamebryo will get serious updates. If they manage to perfect their familiarity with its quirks (every engine has quirks), and the engine also grows in visual quality... it wouldn't be so bad.

In the end, it's not the tools, it's whoever holding them that defines the end result... so even if Bethesda adopts another engine, the results will be still a sum total of their design approach and experience...

Gamebryo was outdated for Fallout 3, it's going to look even worse in two years. I think Fallout 4 in 2012 or 2013 is likely myself, maybe add another year if they switch engines.

There's very little wrong with Gamebryo, though indeed it is a bit last-gen, but there's a lot wrong with how Bethesda has handled it. That is...ineptly.

With some effort they could certainly update Gamebryo to current gen standards. Look at what Valve has done with the Source engine throughout the years to keep it looking nice.

Then again, look at who we are talking about here. Beth has had a completely broken animation engine in just about every one of their games released in the last 8 years...

Not to mention the complete change of gameplay to Fallout 3 from the previous games most likely due to their unwillingness to move away from their "first person holy crap graphix make it easy for everyone to play" formula.

I'd say that extra effort generally is not included in Beth's standards these days.

The next big shift in terms of technology and graphics, in general, probably wouldn't be until 2012 I'm guessing. But yeah, sloppiness will render any great tool useless.

Although when something is momentarily hot, and gamers flock to it even if in reality it is a lacking product; (as we see with Oblivion and now Fallout 3 to an extent) over time I have faith that lack of evolution will catch up to the company failing to evolve. It just takes longer for the mainstream. Albeit Fallout 3 may be forgivable in some regards, it is behind the times in many, and a game using the same engine two or more years from now that is already lacking will finally see a decline in fans. (barring some other innovative miracle) Who knows what competitors there will be either? I always like to use the Tony Hawk franchise as the example since they reached a point of recycling the same game over and over until one day another company released something better. Hawk lost fans who went to the new game forcing the original franchise to finally progress again in an effort to win back those lost.

I imagine this is how Beth is. Even though there may be developers within the company who care about their product, Beth seems to want to only push as far as they can get away with, instead of taking pride in advancement. This isn't to say that everything they do is trash, but it doesn't feel loved; at least, not by the ones in charge. I am sure just by walking within the new Fallout world, one can tell where someone cared and where someone else didn't.

We'll see though, maybe Bethesda will surprise us in the future. I'll tell you, I was never into anything Beth had done before, but a severely updated Oblivion would interest me. Nothing wrong with the concept. I would have bought Oblivion itself if it hadn't of been so poorly executed. (don't get me wrong fans, I do understand why you like it)

EDIT: I don't know a lot about game/graphic engines and all of that, but there are already a lot of options out there besides using this thing that Bethesda is, isn't there? My favorite thing so far has been the use of this motion capture with the Rage/Euphoria engine that GTA IV and I believe Force Unleased uses. Things behave almost like real. Far Cry 2 has a great fire system and up-to-date explosive objects/behavior. Killzone 2 will be making use of all of that I think. It just makes me sad to think how much better FO3 would have looked/been with those things intact. I mean, we don't even have shadows. (shakes head)

I think I'll enjoy the game, but it's like watching Mad Max, and instead of Mel Gibson we get Ben Affleck.

Fingers crossed for F3 to be a financial failure (compared to the financial potential of an Elder Scrolls game), maybe then, they would drop the Fallout franchise all together :newevil:

The bad thing is that it might kill the Fallout franchise itself, unless someone who utterly loved it bought it up and had enough money/resources to recreate it. (such as Interplay itself way down the road) As I've said before, sort of like the Batman movies. But...maybe you want it destroyed so it can only remain a loving memory? :)

I agree 100%. I don't even think we are close yet, IMO.

Same gen of consoles means same graphic.

Actually the graphics pulled out of a console closer to the end of its lifespan are an order of magnitute superior to the graphics you see when it just launched.

Look at the first PS2 titles, then look at end-of-lifespan titles such as "God of War" and "Shadow Of The Colossus". "Black" on the PS2 preserved effects that required shaders on the XBOX version that the PS2 didn't even have !

At the end of PS1's life, there was a full-featured Quake2 port... on the PS1 ! With colored lighting !

Graphics quality on the XBOX360 and PS3 has not yet reached its peak, IMO.

shihonage is correct. As time goes by, developers learn more tricks and tweaks to flesh out the abilities of the hardware, leading to some pretty impressive feats.

I would say I was impressed on how much details and draw distance they got in FF 12 with a smooth fps and no lagging whatsoever. Now the game itself... mileage may vary by driver ;) ... graphically, it was a huge achievement for the PS2

Agreed, it's a staffing issue and really I wouldn't mind them using Gamebryo as long as they don't hype their graphics again. If they have good animations, add shadows, and minimize bloom then I'd be satisfied (though I'm not going to buy the game anyway). I just think that for a company that likes to talk up how good their games look and how being visual immersion is such a high priority, it's bad to fall short on that.

I hear that a lot but I think that Valkyrie Profile 2 looked much better. My biggest problem with FFXII (graphically) was that the textures went from being good to terrible (Vann's six pack). That all said, the best looking game for PS2 is still Okami. It isn't photorealistic, it's extremely well stylized and there is very little that I can see that can be complained about with it.

As a fan of the Elder Scroll's games, I'm hoping that TESV will fall more in line with Daggerfall and Morrowind... although history has told me that this belief is folly.

And, FFXII is my 2nd favourite FF game ;)
