Bethesda playing Fallout 4 on 12/29 at 8pm ET

Some kind of lucky
I didn't see any post about this and thought it would be good to share. It is somewhat dated.

Watched a somewhat old Twitch today of Matt Grandstaff of Bethesda playing Fallout 4. Gstaff seems like a good sport and I have no issues with him. The issues that I have is that when playing, him and his lady-friend have valid criticisms while playing. Things that should have been addressed. These issues range from quests feeling fetchy, assuming that having high intelligence would mean that you would have speech checks based on that skill, being disappointed by some aspects and finding the map hard to navigate. It is apparent that he was not part of the 100 play-testers, nor were any of the development team. I believe that even though he did not mention the worst issues with the game, he did experience frustration and fatigue like some of us here on NMA are vocal about. If nothing else. it is an interesting look at how a high ranking official of Bethesda did not seem overly impressed with the game or that when he was impressed, something happened to take him out of the moment.

He works for the company and there are moments in the video you can tell he is not saying anything negatively with restraint, but there are some things he can't resist criticizing as a player.

I have made a quick list of the most damaging moments of the video to save others time.

00:10:20 Asking why he has no speech checks, even though he has high intelligence.
00:10:59 Confirming Todd Howard in Picture frames. Museum of Freedom.
00:22:18 Radiant AI issues
00:28:59 Complaining about the forced camera angle.
00:30:44 Commenting about companions insulting player choice.
00:32:15 Complaining that the enemy faction does not care if you steal from them.
00:35:10 Complaining about lack of information to read.
00:38:35 complaining about quests feeling fetchy.
00:44:44 Complaining that the quest doesn't update the location you need to travel to.
00:46:06 Complaining that the game guild is not helpful.
00:50:51 Unable to understand the map system or to identify markers for quests easily.
01:04:49 Complaining that companions are not helpful.
01:12:44 Commenting on repeat locations.
01:23:41 ???
01:26:33 Commenting on poor enemy AI.
01:28:50 Commenting on not want to take legendary items but being forced to.
01:29:34 Complaining that quest is not completing at the correct stage.
01:32:43 Stating disappointment in the quest for how it plays out.
01:33:00 Stating that the quest was good, except for getting lost on the ship.
01:33:30 Stating disappointment in the quest again.

He really didn't seem happy while playing it, he sounded tired and bored while he was killing raiders. He said "are the all dead yet" and the girl next to him said "there are still more!" It's hard to watch because he works at Bethesda but he doesn't have any real control over how the game turns out in the long run because he's the community guy and he can't say shit about the game because he works for them.

That's... actually kind of hilarious (and telling)? Confirmation that even some of Beth staff can't stand it.

I'm just glad I didn't buy it. I don't even want to buy the 'ultimate,' 'goty', 'popamole' edition, or whatever thing they'll call it, for 5 bucks 2+ years from now. I'm done hoping the FO franchise will become not shit and that I'll see a return to classic form in my life time - it's in complete Decline now.

And the DICE awards gave this thing that masquerades as an 'RPG' GOTY along with an award for Battlefront. I just don't even know anymore.

Gaming is still a relatively new art. The standards are, obviously, not as high. Even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 got an award once and that game was hardly a pinnacle of shooter design. Give it a decade or so before starting to take awards seriously at any point.

The "average gamer" is someone who plays the mobile twice a week, so on that same scale, Fallout 4 would be pretty impressive.

Honestly, I think a lot of people that work for so-called big video game companies are pretty unhappy about the end results. Years ago, I went to dinner with a guy from Volition. he told me how he and his co-workers were being forced to make a game like GTA [Saints Row], when all they really wanted to do was creative, fun stuff like platformers and other things. I was a big fan of the first Red Faction game, and asked him why Red Faction 2 was so awful, and he told me the corporate mandate was to make something like Unreal Tournament, that the writer hired for the storyline was used to writing romance novels, and other questionable things.
