Blackout error when playing Fallout

I did end up downloading the DOSBox but I have yet to find out how to work that. As far as the anititialising goes, I've tried it for 8bpp and 32bpp since Fallout is an 8bpp game I believe and with all of the different anitialising options with no luck. I just wish I could find out how to get it to work so I could help my friends with the same problems.

EDIT: I clicked all the compatibility changes off and so it didn't do it so often then (about every 10 seconds) but it's still very much annoying. It might be my ATI graphics card as many seem to have this card that are having this problem.

I just tried disabling the video card and restarting my computer, then running the game with no background stuff running but the same thing happened. I just find it weird since I don't think it could be the video card but other people with windows XP have gotten it to run fine.

In my experiences service pack two hates most games, its easier to install fallout, the sp2, its what i did on my comp and it works fine. Also check out whats going on in processes in the ctrl alt del menu, sometimes some fo the programs in there frig up games (Like some, for some reason, make some games freeze on a pc with 600 times the nessisary requirements to run it) smss.exe and csrss.exe like to skrew up gameplay, try stoping them.

hit start, run

then put in the run command 'msconfig'

it will enable you to shut off all the programs you dont want running in the backround at startup... try taking off all the non microsoft products and log off, log back on and start up a game

I have had this problem on certain Windows installations (notably XP - even though my latest install of F2 has had not a SINGLE bug come up during an entire game!).

IF you can't fix the problem, a quick workaround is to hit "C" (for character screen) OR "F1" (for help) ... THEN hit the Escape key to return to the main game interface.

The forces Fallout to redraw the entire screen in both instances and restore the screen
