FO and FO2 travel system were far superior to NV. FO3 worked a little better with this setup because it was designed to be within a limited metro area. FONV tried to return to the original FO model of having the hero travel over a huge geographical part of a state, which is really important to get the idea of different cities and mini-societies developing in different environments and independently of each other. FONV did great with the ideas (I loved Jacobstown and liked the idea of having a huge metro of Vegas in the middle of a wasteland) but the technical execution was pretty bad. A five minute walk from Black Mountain to undefended human settlements is pretty bad. Legion and NCR camps being in shouting distance from each other is also silly. A better system would be a series of fairly large maps (metro areas or local populated wastes) that are accessible only by traveling on the larger, FO-style original map.
