Bring Back Map Travel

Dogmeat Sandwich

First time out of the vault
FO and FO2 travel system were far superior to NV. FO3 worked a little better with this setup because it was designed to be within a limited metro area. FONV tried to return to the original FO model of having the hero travel over a huge geographical part of a state, which is really important to get the idea of different cities and mini-societies developing in different environments and independently of each other.

FONV did great with the ideas (I loved Jacobstown and liked the idea of having a huge metro of Vegas in the middle of a wasteland) but the technical execution was pretty bad. A five minute walk from Black Mountain to undefended human settlements is pretty bad. Legion and NCR camps being in shouting distance from each other is also silly.

A better system would be a series of fairly large maps (metro areas or local populated wastes) that are accessible only by traveling on the larger, FO-style original map.

Actually I was originally going to say an immediate no to this. But in all honesty it sounds like a good idea. Kinda like having 8-10 dlc sized areas to go to. This way each area would be different. One could be more FO3 in style i.e. urban area, then a Mojave area, Mountainous area. etc. You feel like more a big fish in a small pond in the mojave then you do in FO2. I really think that a game in Colorado would work for this type of thing, either that or go furthur north from the core region. We just need to get away from the same old factions.

I assume there would be some type of "semi" randomized "battle grounds" with bandit ambushes and traders?

I like the idea of smaller, new-Fallout style maps connected by old-Fallout style maps. Bonus if random encounters come back -- I've always felt it was a mistake to drop random encounters while traveling and a missed opportunity not to have them while sleeping (you're sleeping on a bedroll in the middle of the desert...why shouldn't a pack of radscorpions happen upon you?)

Perhaps something like in Daggerfall, just not to that large, random extent. Maybe hand craft towns and places of interest. You COULD walk from one end to the other by foot but it would be the biggest time waster of all. A good example of this would be Arcanum. Keep the method of fast travel like in the first two Fallout games. Have random places of exploration and they would show up on your map when you would pass them either by fast travel or on foot exploration. Program random encounters as well.
