Burned out on Fallout?

The Kotex Kid

First time out of the vault
After just having beaten Fallout for my umpteenth time, playing with what I believe the last possible character type, it all ends up being the same. You must wear the Power Armor to survive, and have good skills in computers and energy guns if you want to win.

Now, having done that, the next logical thing in my vicious cycle is to re-install Fallout 2 and play it through. I'll make my typical sniper/martial artist/computer genius/handyman and save the wastes from total annihilation once again. But why? The simple task of getting through the damnable Temple of Trials is so far proving enough of a deterrent from playing it because it sucks so damn bad. Stupid ants...

So, for those of you who've been in or are currently in the same boat as me, how are you or what did you do to convince yourself that it's worth another month or so of your spare time. Only this time, I want to make it last much longer than that, I want to do absolutely everything and anything there is to do out there in the wasteland. I know it's hardly possible, and it IS impossible to get the good ending for all cities invovled (Poor Necropolis), but it would sure be nice to try.

I've purused the mods/utilities forum to try and see if there was any spicy sauces to throw a spin in the works, but all there is are a bunch of cheats and pre-saves with super characters; no fun.

Anyone else ever felt like this about FO?

Tsk, tsk, tsk. So not true.
Last time I beat Fallout I did it without ever actively fighting. Great fun.
You don't need the power armor to survive (it makes the military base and such a lot easier, though), you don't really need great computer skills either. And it's generally not about how you finish the game, it's much more about how you play the game and that gives you a vast array of options.

I kinda sorta agree. When you know that all you need are decent Small Guns/Lockpick and Speech skills to complete Fallout (taking the Tag! perk in late game and boosting Energy Weapons for the end game), the fun tends to disappear after the "umpteenth" time. I never boost Science in Fallout, though. Not worth it, IMO. I only do that in Fallout 2.

That's bollocks. Just run through the Temple Of Trials as fast as you can, if you hate it so much. You can finish it in about 5 minutes, only fighting what's really blocking your way: maybe 4 of those giant ants and a couple of radscorpions... I always do it that way. One random encounter on the worldmap will give you the xp you've missed by avoiding the rest of those critters in the Temple.

Put the games in the cupboard for about a year and try them again then. Yuo'll gladly spent another month or so with them. Works for me. Or buy Arcanum and learn to discover that there indeed exists a game that has more possibilities than Fallout and Fallout 2 combined. :D

All the time. When you've done all possible quests, shot everyone in every town and even played as a diplomat with high Speech/Doctor/Science skills (jeez... what was I thinking), it's time to move on and find yourself a job and a girlfriend. :P

im actually in that rut right now. then i picked up samurai legend musashi and zelda windwaker and realized i liked those kinds of games too. too bad i beat both of them inside a week. well, a week for each. but then again, i could beat fallout 2 in about a 20 hour period. i mean, ive gotten to san francisco (post navarro/power armor) in about 10 hours of playing.

I recently started playing Fallout again. This time wihtout edited characters... it's really funny. I play it once in a while, and I'm almost finished. After I completed it, I'm gonna play F2 completely without edited characters.

I've just made it my quest to get as much done as possible before the end of the game, and make the most efficent character possible in terms of point placement and usage.

I would just like to point out that it is entirely possible to get a good ending for the Necropolis in FO1.... the trick is to only visit it once and complete all the necessary quests in one go without ever going back there. If you never go back to Necropolis the Mutant army never gets there and as long as you repaired the water pump before you took the water chip, the ghouls survive and in the epilogue Necropolis becomes a trading center.

The destruction of the ghouls is only triggered when you go back to Necropolis for a second time.

I just found out how exactly the Fallout Item Changer works... be prepared to witness the awesome power of a Sniper Rifle on burst mode... mwuhahahaha... MWUHAHAHAHA... ahum

Uhm... it also works for Fallout 1... so... uhm... cool, I can have a Bozarish weapon in Fallout... yeah...

Try editing the maps in Fallout 2, like par exemple, add Dog Tags for every Enclave Soldier in the game (dead ones in Klamath and Military base too) then add this item to their inventory in special encounters, then count at the end of the game how many you have...

Or add usually randomly encountered people to normal cities, I found out they really fit in well (bootleggers, homesteaders, prospectors... etc.). Remember to add Old Joe in Vault City. Place supplies on random encounter maps (City maps rule! Can you feel the delicate sound of scavengers in the morning?)

Download the Vertibird mod and change normal scenery Vertibirds to those packed with supplies (in New Reno, I have one packed with 10 laser pistols! Kill the Salvatores and take them!)

Add loot to crash site (the Vertibird than crashed couldnt have lost it's whole cargo, it's nigh impossible!)

Fill the containers in Broken Hills, San Francisco etc.

Give the President a nuclear warhead detonation computer (and a key to it as well)

f you get bored with standard Fallout, get the Mapper - editing was never so easy and fun!

I finished the games (F1/2) the way I thought they ought to be played. Then I finished them the way I wanted (basically telling everyone to f uck off). Then I found the most complete walkthrough there is and I played the games again to see every possible quest there is and every possible thing you can do. After that, I got on this site and read some posts and I'm starting to wanna play the games again but I probably won't for awhile.

P.S. The temple of trials does suck, it discouraged a couple of people from giving Fallout a try.

Hell it almost made me quit, but I was so freakin bored that I kept playing.

I once beat f2 at level 30... that took awhile. I think the most levels I got before beating f1 was 16 (i think)

Of course on rough combat, hard mode without cheating... It wasnt easy

Morpoggel: No, putting an APA and a Vindicator Minigun in ze entrance to ze Temple to mazzacre ze village! OMFG! LOL! DEATH!

...Seriously, I meant making combat in towns a little bigger challenge, like instead of a generic Bishop thug having an MP9 or a shotgun, he now has an G11 or a Combat Shotgun or the Light Support Weapon (L86A1). Now combat is a challenge, as they are proficent with these guns (And no, it's not against realism - Bishop has the backup of NCR, dont forget.) Mordino's were also upgraded.

And the dog tags thing is great. I just love colllecting them from the dead bodies of my enemiez.

play without saving or save less often. if u die start again,if an npc kicks the bucket, so be it, just see how far u can get.it wil definately change the entire way you play the game.

play hard mode, rough combat... and take no npc's along your travels and youll find yourself up against lots of badguys that score more critical hits than you!

I remember running away from I think it was 11 yakuza! I would have died 5 times before I could kill them all!
