Can any russian speaker translate this, please?

Makenshi

Ahoy, ye salty dogs!
Wandering on the wastelands of the internet, I found the image below:

I think it's damn cool, but I'd like to know what do the inscriptions mean, before using it in the internet or in a T-shirt. If it's something inapropriate, it would be a shame to be bearing it, you know.

So, if anyone here who speaks russian is willing to translate it, I would appreciate.

Note: No, I'm not a soviet/comunist lover (don't hate it either), it's just a cool image.

I don't know russian, but Wikipedia has an article on Soviet medals, and an article for that one in particular. According to it, it says "Patriotic War".

Edit: forgot to mention that I also love soviet imagery, despite not being much into communism.

It says "Patriotic War", which is the Soviet name of the war between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. WW 2, for us.

Might not be the most tastefull thing to print on a t-shirt then, sadly. Great looking medal. They sure knew their way around impressive design back then.

Welcome to the world of propaganda! The fact that even people like me who hate communism think it's marvelous imagery is testament to the fact that it worked. I'd have to say that a WWII medal is a safe bet for avoiding controversy over Soviet imagery.

What the hell are you going on about? Of course it's tastefull.

Yeah it prety much translates to "Patriotic War" or something similar.

@the4thlaw:
If your impressed with past propaganda then you havent seen the current one it makes Clark's propaganda from B5 look amature. Btw I think my grandfather had few from the war they are quite similar mostly what divison (rifle in his case) and if they had passed some exams successfully parachute jumping.

I 2nd the translation. It says Patriotic War. Not that there was any disagreement.

I am lucky enough to have a bunch of old pile of small Russian pins. My favorite are the ones with Lenin's head on them that just say C.C.C.P. I love that guys head! It's so assertive.

There are also a bunch of great Russian Olympic medals and pins. They are pretty cool.
