Cassidy?

So, who is he based on?

Our website and also Falloutvault.com says he's based off a vampire in Garth Ennis' Preacher comics.

Except John Cassidy isn't a Vampire, and The Preacher certainly isn't retrofiftyish.

So, why the assumption?

Our reader Dragoon says that "Cassidy was named after Cletus Cassidy, who was Carnage in the spider-man comics. He is more of a 'mean sonuvabitch'"

I would guess that the comic book character from before the war would be Hopalong Cassidy, who was made into a comic and even looks a bit alike.

But he's not a "mean sonuvabitch", as Sander points out.

So?

Was Butch Cassidy ever made into a comic?

Discuss.

I maintain that it's from the Preacher comics. The Fallout 2 developers never showed any attention to the 50s setting, and only thought about what would be cool when it came to easter eggs. I doubt that anyone of them thought that 'Hopalong Cassidy' was in any way cool.

Preacher what? Hopalong Cassidy was the first thing to come to mind, what with the Western-ish theme in Fallout 2 and all.

In fact, Cassidy is a very Western-ish name, and everyone back there was a badass.

If you have the Slaver or Childkiller perks, or a karma of -101 or below, Cassidy will not join you on your quest. He won't leave if you gain these perks or lower your karma after he has joined, though.

He's not that much of a badass, apparently. And Hopalong Cassidy did go around capping bad guys.

Wikipedia said:
Hopalong Cassidy is a fictional cowboy-hero, created in 1904 by Clarence E. Mulford and appearing in a series of popular stories and later novels. Here the character appears as a rude, rough-talking 'galoot'. Beginning in 1935, the character, played by William Boyd was transformed into the clean-cut hero of a series of 66 immensely popular films, only a few of which were based on Mulford's works, but which led, in turn, to a comic book series modelled after the films.

Apparently the original one was badass, and used harsh language.

I really have no idea what a vampire has to do with any of this.

I allways thought he was based on Hopalong Cassidy before I started searching about Fallout on teh intarnet web...most likely because I had never herd of any other Cassidy's back then.

Uh-hm... Butch CASSIDY and the Sundance Kid... ring a bell? Anyone? Helloooooo?

Where. Where does it say so in the game?

You only are presented with a phrase from Cassidy "Dad named me after some comic book character from before the War. Said he was a mean sonuvabitch, too", QFM. So, I ask about Butch Cassidy comics to validate this.

Also, your sig picture is 22px too high.

Hmmm, I need to find those 'cassidy' comics it seems.

Vintage anything is usualy better quality than modern era (execpt the 80's, little good came from that decade)

Yup, Watchmen, Swamp Thing, The Sandman, Doom Patrol, V for Vendetta, Love and Rockets, Thorgal, those comics just plain suck!

That never was a comic, so that's already not the case. Although that would be the most likely answer otherwise.

I always assumed he was Cassidy from preacher. Could be that at the time I was a big preacher fan, but there seems little question on it. To the best of my knowledg, there is no Butch Cassidy comic. If there is, I need to buy it.

Iron Maiden.
One 80's thing that will make up for any bad 80's things. Ever.

There most definitely was a short-lived Hopalong Cassidy comic, graphic novel, etc.

A vampire would be sill-eh!

Of course there was. That was what Hopalong Cassidy was. But, he wasn't a 'badass motherfucker'.

Besides, the Fallout 2 developers weren't known for their adherence to retro pulp, or their aversion of silliness.

Preacher's Cassidy doesn't have enough similarities to really be Cassidy's base to me. He wasn't really a mean sonuvabitch so much as he was a child trapped in a vampire's body with a constructed sense of justice. Sure, Cassidy owned a bar, but there's no suggestion that he had a drinking or a drug problem.

Saying that Fallout 2 had a western theme doesn't help, since Preacher had a huge western theme and was also designed around an appreciation of Americana, though Preacher's Americana was circa 1990.

I guess there's no real way to prove it unless it comes from the horse's mouth, but having the character based on Preacher's Cassidy would be stupid.
