Character Customization

Ziggy Stardust

Space Alien
You have to admit that Fallout 4 gave you a lot of freedom for how you want your war veteran named Nate or his lawyer wife named Nora and their son named Shaun who was conceived in a park to look. I mean, I'm gay, anti-war, and frankly don't want children but what can you do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hate to bring up mods since I dislike how they have been used to give Bethesda a free pass for years, but this is why I always used "Start Me Up." You get to skip the trash intro and it even changes 99% of all mentions of you being the character Bethesda came up with. The only thing the author missed is a single response to the BoS doctor when he asks about your history as far as I know... easily ignored considering how great it felt to not be that doofus Nate. There's another one that mutes the protagonist which also works wonders for immersion... but yeah, I totally agree with you about the forced backstory.

The thing is, Bethesda seems to abhor the idea of treating this franchise like Elder Scrolls, where the PC is a blank slate, so I don't really expect anything else from them. Although the whole married with children thing was probably going too far...

Yeah what’s weird is that in Skyrim you could really be whoever you want and choose your own backstory which is what drew me to the game. In Fallout, you’re Nate.

I also use start me up. I think the BoS are arrogant fucks so I prolly wouldn’t encounter that line anyway. The changes they’ve made were quite impressive.

Might just be me, but any white guys I make in the CharCreator just look like variations of the Nate preset. Unless I give them goofy jawlines or something its all very sameface in my experience. Nora looks good enough to keep the way she is. They probably just should have went full preset character imo, they already have the mass effect dialogue wheel of kind yes and angry yes, might as well commit all the way.
And from what I remember, the kid is another Daddy Neeson where the only similarity you two share is your skin tone.

Tell that on a Beth thread and everyone will tell you that other episodes did not leave you more choices about your character.

other episodes didn’t have as much appearance customization but it doesn’t matter without character customization

That was more like. *Here you were a vault dweller. Here you were a tribal*. Not making the difference between where you were born, and what were your lifestyle choices.
