Check it out: a new *real* mod...

Genn

First time out of the vault
Seems a few people around here have been asking about new *real* mods in the works. Well, I might just have what you're all after. Here's the deal:

I've been working on an improved version of a mod I made awhile back known only as "LongMod" which swapped several of the guns in-game for some modern ones. Well, I thought the mod looked like bunk even though several people emailed me and thought otherwise, but the point is is that I was generally unsatisfied. The solution? Re-make the mod from scratch, replace ALL (well, ALOT) of the games weapons (melee included), and even change some game dynamics.

So far here's what I have:

-- Gun's are now more expensive and the amount of ammo availible has been more than halved.

-- Weapons and equipment are now almost twice as heavy to make things more "realistic". Now you can't carry five guns and 2000 rounds of ammo for each. Hopefully this will make the game more of a challenge and more interesting. I tried to make things pausible although non-combat items still weigh almost nothing.

-- EVERY Small Gun has been replaced with modern weaponry, although I tried to keep the selection as plausible as possible. I know there's a large group of people out there that believe that no gun in Fallout should be "real", but humor me here. A few weapons that replace the "rarer" guns (Mauser, Needler, Handcannon, etc) were added for coolness. More common guns were replaced with common weapons that I think would be found in fair abundance in the hands of pre-Fall Californian citizens and military.

-- MOST Big Guns have been replaced. The only two I didn't touch were the two 5mm miniguns (although the ammo is now 5.56mm NATO).

-- EVERY ballistic ammunition in the game has been replaced or modified; mainly for price, weigh, and availibilty.

-- Energy weapons only edited for weigh and availibility.

-- Many melee weapons replaced, although these were mainly the rarer ones (aka the Wakasashi is now a full blown Katana).

I'll have more info later tonight as I have to jet off for a few hours. Expect screenshots tomorrow and a finished version by the end of the weekend.

One more thing, I need to host this mod somewhere. Who at NMA should I contact to get this thing on the Interweb?

Sounds cool. Now, I can feel proud of myself for carrying around the Desert Eagle for most of the game.

Okay, fare enough. But at least it's a mod none the less, yes? I just got back in so I'm going to get working on finishing this thing up tonight. The melee weapons aren't quite finished but I can always release a patch later.

I guess I should post some pictures, no? I would use ingame screenies, but since this mod is all about the weapons I think I'll put together some sort of weapon spreadsheet or something. Anyhow, more on this later...

One more thing though: As this mod replaces ALOT of files, I couldn't get either DatMan or DatExtractor to compile them all into a proper .dat, so the only way to get the mod to work is to manually place all the files in your \data\... folders. Sorry, but I've tried everything I can think of and the stupid thing doesn't seem to work any other way. Oh well...

IT IS FINISHED!

But not without some flaws... Oh well. I'm uploading the .zip file to the files "forum" right after I post this. I figured I'd let you guys see a little of what the mod has in store for you before you download it so...

One more thing: the mod is set up so that you have to go in and replace everything in the Fallout 2 DATA folder with the mod's data. I know this isn't very neat and clean, but FAME doesn't work on my PC (running XP Pro) so I couldn't test to see if a separate .dat would work. I also realize that I couldn't just make a separate PATCH000.dat clone with all my mod data in it because, well, that just doesn't work, does it? The mod data includes all the PATCH000 data in it though, so just rename your PATCH000.dat to something else and then paste all the mod data into the DATA folder, then you're good to go.

Please let me know if you find any bugs (except for the one mentioned in the readme) and I'll try to get an updated version of the mod out ASAP. Hopefully though the one bug I mentioned in my readme is the only one....

Anyhow, enjoy!

Wow! That's some really cool stuff you got there. Did you make the models yourself? It looks so good I'll actually reinstall FO2 to try it out!

I was wondering when someone's gonna put lever-action carbine and MAC look-alikes in the game.

Personally I'm not against "real" guns in Fallout - as long as they're restricted to mods.

About 85% of the images I used are Photoshop-edited pieces I found through Google Image Search, but of those 85% about half were seriously edited. The lever-action shotgun and the katana were found on The Wastes HL mod webpage, so I can't take credit for those. I wanted to use more of their stuff (it's all so cool looking! ) but I figured I should try to limit myself. The Throwing knife and Taurus Raging bull were found on Haven O' Frags. The Uzi, Tommy gun, M14 (none custom), and BAR were all made from some engineering diagrams I pulled up for each weapon. The F2000 and one of the grenade launchers are images of weapons found in the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.

I know it's a bit of a let-down to say that I didn't draw all the images up from scratch, but I was working on a time-frame and really didn't have the time (or patience :D ) to model all the guns I wanted in Max6 (which I have and know how to use) and then edit and color them in Photoshop. Feh, besides, it's the end result that matters. I just wanted something that I figured people (especially myself) would want to play. I can't take credit for all those that made the original images, but I can take credit for editing them to look nice in Fallout 2 and setting this all up to work as a smooth mod.

Anyhow, enough apologies. Enjoy!

I know this is a silly question, but did you ask them first?

To be completely honest... No.

*Cuts off own left pinky finger*

No excuses as to why I didn't ask first, but I will say in some sort of a defense that I credited them in my readme and, in a way, here on this board.

I appologize for any mental anguish I may have caused the team. Please don't hold anything against me.

*bows*

EDIT::

Oh shit! I just realized that the Winchester image I used wasn't from The Wastes mod! It's Deimos' T2 Winchester model for Action Half-Life! Oh shit! Oh shit! Sorry Deimos!!!

Uhm... well I "uploaded" it in the files section, but I guess the admin hasn't posted it yet... They're busy people, but I'm sure it'll be up for download as soon as they can make it so.

APTYP is correct :P But I just checked, I can't see any files that's waiting for my approval.. try to reupload it or send it to me..

I'm going to re-upload it in the next 15 minutes. Let me know if it doesn't get to you by the end of the day. I've fixed a few more glitches too, so "yay".

EDIT:

Okay, I just re-uploaded it. Took about three or four minutes to get through but it said it made it.

Get the readme from Files entry for this mod, and find out what it is by elimination.
