Christian Reviews

I haven't played Wasteland 2 in a bit. I have three playthroughs(one which I never properly saved) and I haven't beaten the game. I destroyed and ran Angel Oracle to the ground because I had a huge suspicion they were cannibals and my second playthrough is in the Rave Club, never to be seen again.

And my third playthrough accidentally nuked the Canyon of Titan. I know the God's Militia has a recruit you can take but what does the Militia do in general? Are they just religious bandit douchebags or what?
They have a whole story arc and quest line. From the wiki:
"God's Militia (also known as the Salvation Church) is a Los Angeles cult based on a warped reading of the James King Bible. It is an incredibly violent, neo-Christian militant order bent on bringing their vision of the world to everyone on the tips of their bayonets."

One of their leaders likes to frequent the Hollywood brothel for some nasty things.

All the factions are well done in Wasteland 2, and it's certainly not a game for the easily-offended.

This reminds me how much I wish Joshua Graham was a permanent companion in New Vegas.

IKR? One of the best characters ever made honestly. Though I like Daniel just as much. Both of them make very compelling arguments. I usually leave the decision up to how I've made my character that go around rather than my own personal beliefs.

I purposefully stretched out the ending of Honest Hearts as long as I could just to get Joshua to follow me everywhere. It was nice.

I think one of the best moments with Joshua I had was with Nevada Skies installed. Just as I was leaving the Sorrows Camp for the first time, it began to rain, and thunder flashed across the sky. It was night time. Suddenly there Joshua was, saying "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea we wept when we remembered Zion." It was so poetic. Mm. Easily one of my favorite video game moments ever.

Agreed, he was extremely well written.

The voice actor was great, and damn can he deliver Bible sermons. Might just go to Church if the preacher had that voice!

So much potential for a character like Joshua. Could have led some insight into Caesar's Legion and comment on the state of the Mojave as you go along. A religious perspective on the wasteland is not a very common thing in Fallout. Another thing I found disappointing was the lack of use for the scripture that you get. You never get the chance to do anything with it although I hold onto it for good luck (not the SPECIAL kind though I think theres a mod for that).

I agree. No matter how long his dialogue was I was always enthralled by what he had to say and how he said it.

Sometimes my characters become religious after their adventure through Zion, particularly if they exhausted all the dialogue with Joshua and Daniel about it. Other times they take the Scripture and toss it into Dead Wind Cavern, where no sane man would dare venture. It pains me to do that but it's interesting seeing just how many characters I can create with all sorts of different motivations.

Honestly I think Joshua's particular quote from the Scripture makes even more sense if you read the whole thing. It fits so well with Joshua's character. It's from Psalms 137:

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
Upon the willows in the midst thereof we hanged up our harps.
For there they that led us captive asked of us words of song, and our tormentors asked of us mirth:
'Sing us one of the songs of Zion.'
How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a foreign land?
If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not;
if I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy.
Remember, O LORD, against the children of Edom the day of Jerusalem;
who said: 'Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.'
O daughter of Babylon, that art to be destroyed;
happy shall he be, that repayeth thee as thou hast served us.
Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the rock.

It very much goes along with how the White Legs burnt New Canaan to the ground and salted the earth ('Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof') and how Joshua wishes to pay the White Legs back in full. (happy shall he be, that repayeth thee as thou hast served us)

I don't think I've ever had a character become religious but they always walk away from Zion a least a little touched. I've never had the heart to dispose of the Scripture.

Joshua makes the Old Testament bearable. Usually I can't stomach it with gems like marrying your rapist, lot's of death and killing and a healthy dose of hypocrisy.

The last character I played as, a man named Jefferson, was always a "Might is Right" sort of person, though he had a good soul. He felt technology wasn't needed in this new world, and that people had far too much reliance on it, not unlike Caesar. Thing is, he saw Caesar as a complete hypocrite after seeing his Legionaires using guns and Caesar's Auto Doc. Thus he went Independent. As he ventured through Zion, he very much agreed with Joshua Graham's stance on how they should defend Zion. He doesn't believe in letting people simply be pushed around, and if the ensuing conflict results in death, so be it. So long as good wins out in the end. Thus he really took to the Old Testament, particularly in the Book of Numbers which focuses a lot on Jewish conquests in order to make their homeland. He likes the idea of a God that isn't afraid to dirty His hands if it means good wins out in the end, and the Old Testament in particular really appeals to his "Might is Right" belief system.

In the end Jefferson destroyed Hoover Dam's generators but kept Helios One running. In his mind, technology was something man wasn't ready to be trusted with again. He only let Helios One keep running in order to ease people into not having to rely on things like electricity. He let the Brotherhood of Steel live, and, after liberating the Mojave, he turned over technological supervision over to them. He, meanwhile, began trying to show people how to defend themselves without guns, how to cultivate the land, that sort of thing. He's a very hands-on type of leader. During that entire playthrough he never once picked up a gun, much less used it. Unarmed only, particularly with the Fist of the North Rawr after completing Lonesome Road. It was a very long playthrough but very fun.

Normally I would debate you heavily on those so-called gems you're describing, but no. I'm just going to follow Dead Money's teaching and learn to "Let go". Had enough religious arguments in my youth to know it never ends prettily. Just makes both sides hate each other's guts with no one learning a damn thing.

Are you kidding? I love religious debates, especially creationist and evolutionist debates and I learn quite a bit about the bible, Christianity or biology. Keep in mind I don't have a problem with the new testament, in fact I find many of it's messages appropriate for even atheists as it teaches love and forgiveness. Now while I enjoy the Old Testament as a fantasy novel I can't agree to it as a religious text because God is... well... a bit of an asshole. Yeah... (gulp)

(Runs away)

My current character Vergil is a cybernetic ubermensch who plans on becoming Emperor of the Mojave and probably the surrounding areas as well. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. ;p

I'm actually working on a Legion run right now with a man named Novus. He's a very stealthy sort of killer, sort of a Frumentaari if I had to compare him to a rank. For instance, after turning over false Legion raid plans over to that sergeant in Camp Searchlight and getting his Legion fame, he proceeded to don an NCR Facemask disguise and brutally murdered every single one of them in his sleep. He doesn't like to leave things up to chance and prefers to do the job himself. He also sold the sergeant into slavery because he thought the man would do better with hard labor than death. I've never played a stealthy character before, Mister Sandman is a very fun perk. I'm tempted to try it out at Camp McCarran and see how many kills I can rack up.

After that I plan to either do one of the following: A full NCR run where I play as a yes-man of the NCR, following all my orders to the T, never deviating, and when given a choice that might help the NCR, I take it. Such as giving Primm over to NCR jurisdiction. There's so many NCR choices I've never actually done before, so it should be different. The other playthrough I was planning is as a Fiend. Take Logan's Loophole, find all the chems I can get, systematically murder every single person in the game except the Powder Gangers, the Fiend Leaders, and the Great Khans. Let anarchy rule the day and rule over a city of bones. It'll probably be challenging as fuck but fun.

I think it's probably more about the fact you aren't understanding the actual meaning behind the Scripture as to why God acts like an "asshole" as you so bluntly put it. But I'm not getting into this today. No no no. You won't tempt me. I'm keeping my opinions to myself.

All jokes aside I do plan on one day writing down this current character I'm going through's story. I've had a lot of fun so far and with such great mods like the someguy200 series I've had a lot of stuff to flesh out this character with. Still, despite being 120 hours and just finishing Old World Blues I'm probably only 1/3 of the way through where I want to take this character.

Not understand?

You're right actually. I don't understand how God says 'no killing' and yet allows the Israelites to invade and kill other tribes for the Chosen Land.

Hehehe... HAHAHAHA!!!

Yeah, I actually did New Vegas Bounties 1-3 with Jefferson pretty recently. It was fun, but boy howdy did 3 take me for a loop. Too bad he just kinda.. gave up on modding and left it at 3. There was some little continuation mod he made but it makes my game crash and it doesn't really finalize anything. Disappointing, but at least he gave us those 3 great mods and a few great side quest mods. I like his boxing mod a lot myself. Reminds me of Fallout 2's boxing arena.

I like writing down the histories of my characters and coming up with backgrounds so it's understandable why they are the way they are. It helps prepare you on how to play the game rather than running into it blindly and making up the character as you go along. I enjoy setting it all up beforehand, like with Jefferson and how he hated technology.

Same, that's really fun to do. I'm writing a 'Complete History of the McDoodle Line', a long proud line of gay men.

I could explain that to you, but it doesn't matter. It's not like I'm going to magically change your views. No, you'll walk away still thinking God is an "asshole" and I'll walk away thinking you have no understanding of the Scripture. Just stop, it isn't going to solve anything and I refuse to debate about it. I've lost friends over this sort of thing because I could not pierce their thick skulls or they would devolve into insulting my intelligence over my beliefs. There is no point, I won't condone it.

Yea, ever since I was young I always kinda formed my own little side stories within the game. New Vegas Bounties III was pretty amazing after all that build up. Plus
"Having Marko's alias be "Virgil" while my character was hiding his real identity of "Vergil" was kinda surreal with how well it worked out considering I didn't plan for that at all."]
