CivCity: Rome

Duckman

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Anyone have it?

I went to make a preorder today at my local EB, and apparently it's already released, and I thought it came out in a few days...

Give me some reasons whether or not to buy this, as I'm buying it tomorrow... Unless of course you give me reason not to buy it :P

EDIT: The recommended system specs are really quite low... It looks like this is another pro for my nearly outdated PC.

Who cares about Rome? (don't buy it! better get drugs or hookers)

Hmm I see your point

Anywho, I guess Rome has been overdone by every gaming genre, but I'd like to see it from the perspective this game portrays.

Don't buy it. I haven't even heard of that game, and games I never heard of have a tendency to suck.

Of course, it's entirely possible that the game is awesome and I'm uninformed.

Well, I'm only predicting this game will be good, only due to the fact that Sid Meier and all his bitches created it, along with some other duders. It looks quite nice (the graphics(yes I know that great graphics do no amount to a good game(sometimes))), and looks different from other straight Civilization games, like Caesar, or Pharaoh, that are Civilization specific.

Well, due to everyone else's lack of help, I tried to look up stuff on the game. I haven't played it so I can't give you any kind of definitive answer though.

On the one hand, it looks an awfully lot like the Caesar series so if you didn't enjoy those games, I would advise you staying away. From the preview I read, the game's greatest change of pace is the ability to research and build wonders. However, wonder building is described as a VERY slow process so I can see that getting frustrating and being a broken element if not done right.

The research part does sound interesting but it won't change the game much from the Caesar formula.

Also, Firefly Studios are one of the contributors to the game and from what I've heard, the Stronghold series is REALLY good as a castle building simulator. So they might have an interesting contribution to make to the game.

So yea, it looks like it might be a good game to check out. Unfortunately, I'm a sucker for the Caesar games and always suck at them when I get em so I'll probably stay away. But it doesn't look like it could be a BAD game. If you pick it up, let us know.

Stronghold 2 was crappy as hell, so I'm going to remain wary of this one until I read a few reviews or try the demo.

The first Stronghold was alright, though. RIP GodGames...

Firefly has released four games to date: Stronghold, Stronghold Crusader, Space Colony, and Stronghold 2. They did a very good job with Stronghold, and with the Crusader expansion. Space Colony was mediocre in every respect, and Stronghold 2 was a disaster. Basically, they show a strong downward trend, so I would advise caution with Firefly.

But Fireaxis had to get involved, and complicate matters.

Does it strike anyone else that 'CivCity' seems too similar to 'SimCity?'

WELL...

After fucking around on the sandbox single mission type thing they have, I realised a few things...

-- It reminded me of Stronghold 2... The graphics anyway. You build what you wanted wherever you wanted, but only in 4 angles.

-- I haven't amped up the graphic settings as yet, but they don't look all that great... Yet... But the game runs very smoothly on medium settings. But it definitely runs faster than the laggerific SH2

-- The loading time to get to the main menu, well let's say, takes a very long time... I didn't time, but it felt like over 5 minutes. Fucking painful whilst waiting for a new game to load, especially if it's your first time playing, waiting anxiously to see if your buy was any good. I'm running a P4 2.8 gHz with 512mb RAM, but that is well over the required processor speed, and on par with recommended RAM.

Well I'll play through some campaigns soon, and update y'all.

I've acquired the game as well, I have every Firefly game to date, why not add one more?

To the question of development, there is no doubt it is a Firefly game first.

As Space Colony was Stronghold-meets-Sims, CivCity: Rome is Stronghold-meets-Pharaoh. One example being that housing will upgrade depending on the local availability of goods. The military portion is also similar, which has been simplified from Stronghold. You now build forts, up to three, each of which will house one army (built as you supply the fort with weapons). You control the army as a single unit, and can send it out on the world map to intercept enemies or to conquer other cities. You can also build watch towers to fend off riots and wild animals. Little of the heavy military angle from Stronghold remains.

Johnny, I suppose it depends on what intentions are behind the similarity.

I had hoped this would be Ceasar 3 but with a bigger emphasis on military, like Stronghold or Crusader. :(

I have never played Caesar III, so I am unable to compare it.

A few things I have to add to Duckman's comments. The graphics are similar to Stronghold 2, but better in every regard. Generally things look more polished, and the animations are leagues ahead of Stronghold 2. About the loading, the in-game loading is only a couple seconds, so after the long load time starting the game up; it is relatively painless. It also seemed shorter the second time I started the game, so it might be something that only happens the first time the game is played.

I'm enjoying the game, though I haven't extensively played through it yet. It is much more focused on city-building than Firefly's other games, the military parts being simplified; so the appeal depends on what type of game you enjoy. The balancing required to produce/trade for and distribute goods and services is both challenging and rewarding, it hasn't become tedious for me at this point. I would say that CivCity: Rome is definitely better than Stronghold 2 or Space Colony, too early for me to judge it against Stronghold though.
