Cliff Technique

Im not sure if this has been done already or not. heres a method I developed to make clifs in fallout 2.

HOW TO DO IT:
1: make a wall and a floor like this:
one.jpg

2: put a roof on that wall like this:
two.jpg

3: make the wall invisible and place floor tiles on the other side like this:
three.jpg

4: make the walls visible again and this is what you should have:
four.jpg

5: decorate your cliff how you like it:

seven.jpg

And there you go.

If you want the player to be able to access this area, make some block objects like this:

five.jpg

six.jpg

now you need a way for them to get up there. There are many ways to achieve this(ladders, stairs) but ive only tested one.

Make a cave in the wall and some stairs or a pothole above the cave

eight.jpg

make the stairs or pothole take the player to right outside the cave, and make an exit grid or a spacial script in the doorway of the cave that takes the player near the stairs or pothole.

I think you should make some new tiles for that, then.

It really just looks awful if you use Fallout's tiles like that.

Your method is fine but I'll have to agree with Ashmo.

You need new tilesets, walls and scenery in this case to make it look good.

Damned out of the sky  That is very
clever, I am going to try that...
Why thank you. I am quite good at doing new things with old stuff.

About it looking terrible. I made the pictures in a hurry(I used only one tile for the roof and one section of wall for the wall.) Ill try to make one thats better.

That is really cool. I too will have to tinker around with that. Nice work Xavierblazer.

Xavierblazer, I managed to find a way to make a 2D and 1/2 building:

building1.jpg

This is the building with roof tiles on.

building2.jpg

This is the building with roof tiles off. As you can see it's only an illusion, but it's almost perfect. Also, no new/edited grafics needed.
It's a bit difficult to implement this technique in a massive way, but I think it's interestig. tell me what you think.[/img]

Did you notice that that technique is used constantly in New Reno? Check salvatores bar and the two casinos. At least your thinking in the right direction. I encourage everyone to tinker around with any kind of mapping tricks, see what you come up with.

No, it is not the SAME technique, you can't get into a building 3rd floor on the same map where the first one is. Not in the original game, anyway.

To The_Pastmaster: Few gamers dwell on the modding forum (or so I think), if someone is going to use this technique then it will be considered as "new". Also it is simple to devise. I made this building more than a month ago, sooner or later somebody else would have made something similar...

Are you saying that you were only allowed to make two floors like that, but you found a way to make three?

No, I mean you could not look into the third floor - or the second floor if you make a two floored building...

It is interesting and cretive. There are some flaws with it though.

1: The player wont have acess to the inside of the building
2: The player cant get behind the building

Much like my cliffs, its nice to look at, but you cant let the player have very much reactivity with it. Perhaps combine the effects, and make an evil looking skyscraper on a cliff, overlooking the city below.

Or, you could take the Cathedral approach to it and make fiddling with the door transport you inside.

Yes, the player cannot get behind the building, that's whay the technique must be used sparingly. You can allow the player to the higest floor though, in the building I showed there are stairs down in the smallest room. Another flaw I discovered: "entrance" to the building must be from a different map/map layer. If the entrance is on the same level then the pc gets teleported to the new location instantly, and the screen is not centered on the pc. This can create problems related with scroll blockers. It was an interesting experiment anyway. See you and have a nice time.

I cannot see the pictures :( . My e-mail is modmaker@seznam.cz ... I'd like to see them.

Ok thx :) I want to see what u mean. I only know how to make second (third,...) level of buildings using tiles as roof. I found link here from "How to make second level..."

Its actually just about taking advantage of the perception of the isometric viewpoint(something like that)

It is very useful for adding unique locations, and I sucessfully made it look pretty good and very interactive in the Las Vegas town thing. I dont think any pictures are on the net, and I cant do anything here from school but heres what it looks like:

The squigley lines should be trees. The areas labled Floor Tiles should be all from the same tile set, as should the Roof Tiles.

EDIT: heres a screenshot from FMF that shows what I mean.
fmf_shot_06.jpg

You would just make it so that the ladder moves you to a hex on the same map near the top of the ladder. Getting down owuld be easy to do too. Ill make some better examples later tonight.
