Combat Shotgun Vats issues?

Jakor

First time out of the vault
The past couple of days, I have noticed that my combat shotgun with used (mainly on raiders) indoors only under vats (to the head) seems to not do nearly any damage. It had always worked for me before, but I watched one guy take 3 shots to the head and lose only 3 bars of life, I come out of vats and two shots to the chest and they're dead.

At first I though I might have been missing (hitting walls or something) but today it happened without anything in the way. Raider walked around the corner, I tag him, he doesn't get hurt very much.

I didn't notice you saying anything about checking the CND on your gun, perhaps it is about to break? That affects damage.

Only his damage isn't affected, it's only his VATS damage. So it can't be condition or he wouldn't two-kill them with shots in the chest.

I don't know, Jakor, I'm dumbfounded to be honest, but do keep in mind that shotguns - other than other guns - have a spread shot. That could mean that headshots from any distance except up really close will have much of the shot not hitting the target and just missing wholesale. Have you tried VATS headshooting up close?

If you try to headshot them too close, I found that you have a huge likelihood that you will miss, you have to have then at least a foot away from you for VATS headshot to work properly. If they are in melee range, dont use VATS, just Point blank them

from watching it in VATS it seems that the shot spreads at longer ranges just like real shot, and furthermore it seems like the shot pellets do damage individually. so one thing that will happen is that if you're aiming at a mirelurk's face (for example) there is a certain range where the CS gets all the shot "in the hole" and it does a ton of damage, but beyond that range the shot mostly goes into the shell and has little effect.

it works pretty the same way with humans except that the shot will miss the head entirely rather than hitting the shell.

From any kind of distance, you have to aim at the body or most of the shot will miss entirely even on a direct "hit".

I've noticed with the combat shotgun, if I'm aiming for the head and the target gets right up next to me the gun just seems to shoot over their head. If you're talking about at a distance, then yeah I've noticed some missing, I figure its just the spread nature of the gun.

Well I guess it's missing too because sometimes It'll do small damage 2x then kill the guy the third time with almost all his life.

Oh well, I'll consider it just a small balance since the combat shotgun has such a powerful shot.

That missing issue i also having with rifles, very strange.

My shotgun = 95% repaired.
Play Very Hard.
One shot in VATS blow of a Raiders head.

Distance 3-5 feet.

I've also noticed that at melee range missed head shot occur pretty often with long guns. I've had raiders literaly step past the barrel of the hunting rifle so I'm shooting over their shoulder.
