Command & Conquer Nostalgia: Old stuff

Red Alert 3 is awesome.

And 3D models will be better than 2D everyday, if only for the lesser amount of work they involve..

You do realize most of the 2d pixel figures in those games were first created as 3d models and then rendered as sprites?

2d art will always look better than 3d.

Besides, what kind of stupid argument is this? "Herp derp, I take ugly stuff over beautiful stuff just because it doesn't take so long to create" ?

I love this generalizations.

No, 2d art will not always look better than 3d. Example: Check out Grimrock. It's an old school dungeon crawler and it is in 3d and it looks fucking awesome.

Red Alert 3 is awesome... That makes your point kind of break down and fail, Pixie.

Failure is my friend. 8-) I think nostalgia plays a large part in how we feel about these older games. I haven't touched Red Alert 3, and it's probably a great game, but still, I love the world of pixels, look how beautiful RA2 is.

That game looks great, I love the restricted movement - oh no I'm having an attack of nostalgia. Anyway I'm an old fashioned bastard, I just can't help it. The first few years of game playing probably affect our attitudes to the games we like and dislike more then anything else. Old favorites are hard to kill.

Yup. And splendid gameplay, very comfortable and relaxing.
There is a lot of rotating, flashing and zooming crap in 3D games for my poor eyes. :yuck:

How about you read my post to the end, huh? Instead of behaving like a kid with a short attention span.

And no, 2D art will not look better than 3D. All is in the execution. Is Baldur's Gate 1 looking better than Gothic?

Case in point. You're using a touched up, promotional screenshot with stuff that's absent in the actual game (building designs are entirely different) to justify your point.

I can use the same trick to prove my point:

But that doesn't mean it holds any water. Red Alert 2 looks worse in the game than you make it out to be.

I never liked Red Alert 2. It was just way too crazy for my taste. Because I never experienced Red Alert 1 to be that crazy, I am hating on Red Alert 2 (and the follower) up until today.

I always felt that since Red Alert 2 was based on 1960's Cold War-era stuff, it's natural leanings towards wackiness could be forgiven.

Red Alert 3 on the other hand was basically 'Hey guys, remmeber that picture of the War Bear from the Internet? How cool would it be if we had them in the game!' and 'Starcraft has three factions, we should Japanime samurai George Takei too'

Red Alert 2 and especially Yuri's Revenge weren't "leaning towards wackiness". They were balls out "LOLWar". The Soviet Campaign in RA2 managed to be grim, despite some comical overtones, but the Allies were a joke.

Red Alert 3 is simply a sequel to Red Alert 2. A very faithful one.

Red Alert 2 looked more or less like that screenshot. It was a sharp looking game.

Many 3D games feel a bit devoid of personality compared to an expertly rendered 2D game of old, such as RA2 or BG2. I mean, compare NWN with BG2 or Planescape. It's just so plain. Look at the maps in Commandos. Beautiful.

That's why I still think Prince of Persia the shadow and the flame is the best game ever made

OT I Have to say this Command and Conquer stuff sounds interesting. I never played it but just browsing through the wiki makes the world interesting. Maybe I'll Borrow my brother's copy of C&C3 that he has permanently within reach on his computer desk.

Why do you think it's better than the original PoP?

Much better Aesthetic. It's one of the prettiest games I have ever played. That and the perfect length (and possibly that it is the first video game I ever played besides tetris, thus filing it with nostalgia for me) of it makes it better than the first

Played the game so much as a kid. Played RA1 on PS1, and played CandC and RA2 on PC. Good god, those games blew me away first time through.

And when I first played that mission where you go to the moon and have very limited resources... Taught me how to play an RTS like Chess.
