SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — It was the talk of the town on Friday: two policemen trying to catch two bank robbers hopped on a streetcar because they lacked a car.

While the robbery itself went largely unnoticed, the ludicrous — and abortive — attempt Monday by the two cops was reported by eyewitnesses late Thursday and carried by Sarajevo newspapers the next day.

The scene could have been taken from a funny movie ridiculing police: two pursuing cops riding a streetcar in downtown Sarajevo, as the two fleeing robbers with $9,800 turn into a side street.

The two helpless officers could only watch as the robbers disappeared in a crowd. Neither the money nor the robbers have been found.

"I seriously cannot believe that my colleagues could be so stupid — what were they thinking? They made the entire force look bad," a Sarajevo policeman, who insisted on anonymity, told The Associated Press on Friday.

The same officer said that Sarajevo police currently are in desperate need of vehicles to seriously tackle even petty crime.

"The cars we have are old, and most of them break down all the time. The [interior] ministry has allocated the money for new cars, but they have not yet purchased them," the officer said.

Police later said the holdup in broad daylight at Privredna Bank on Sarajevo's main Titova Street had been carried out with only plastic guns.

And most likely a very, very shitty movie. The poster alone makes me queasy.

I just mentioned Taxi because I just saw a preview for it when I went to see Hero (great movie, go see it, now [though the fight scenes are not what make it great, rather the story telling does]!) on Saturday.

Does indeed look like a terrible movie.

"Gun rack", eh?

"Rotating rims", eh? Need someone to "Rotate" your "Rim", eh? EH?

nudge nudge wink wink

Glad you`re back from vacation Nudge.

Kotario i saw Hero on DVD months ago, curious how it is only now beeing released in the states, good flick.

I just feel sorry for those cops being made fun of by their peers.

Sure, they failed to catch the guys, but at elast they tried.

Talked with my brother, who just saw the movie as well; we both loved it for the same reason: the story-telling. The first rendition is simple, clear villains and heros; then they tell the story again, and it becomes more complicated. The story is then told again, and parts are told over and over, each time become more refined.

You start out with archetypal movie characters, heros and villains. By the end, you have complicated human beings, motivated by a host of different issues and with their own inner conflicts. Neither does the movie really have a villain, everyone is doing what they see as best, and the ending really is the best one possible (even if it a bad ending for the individuals).
