Could we invite Herve Caen here?

First time out of the vault
Hello I was wondering if we could one day invite Herve Caen on this forum.I recently discovered some claims made by a former Interplay employee, website is quite old: http://www.itsuckstobejoe.com/interplay.asp

I was wondering if he would accept answering questions from community on the past of Interplay, decisions they took, etc.

I don't think there will be many members like to have a chat with him, consider he is one of those reasons why Van Buren(AKA the real Fallout 3) die before be able to see the light of the day.

That's exactly why we as so many member want to chat with him. Regardless of his desire to chat with so many members.

I doubt it would be a fruitful conversation. He'd just lie a bunch about how he's really a great guy and a good manager and it's all someone else's fault he drove the company into the ground and haven't done anything of note with it in 15 years.

If anything this is too lenient and too slow. I'm more surprised the first post wasn't an incoherent rant filled with expletives and insults.

I don't think he ever had any affiliation to the Fallout franchise, no personal love for it. He wouldn't care basically.

TBH, I don't see what good that would do.

It'd just end in basically the same shit that probably happens to him already. We'd immediately dislike him for starting this whole mess with the Fallout franchise, he'll immediately not care because it's not in his interests. We'd get nowhere, and nothing would change.

Dear Herve, you had one of the best collection of RPG developers in history but then accounting incompetence lost them BG3 and a year later you shut them down. Within a few years of that Bioware and Bethesda were releasing titles that bought in hundreds of millions in revenue in the same genre(including one that was the IP of the studio that you shut down). If you had just taken your best studio, spent most of your resources wisely supporting them you would be in the business of releasing full price titles every couple of years that sell millions of copies.

This isn't 20/20 hindsight thinking, throughout the entire history of gaming the best bet has always been to look after your best studio. Scratch that, in the history of business it has always been the recognised wisest choice to support the strongest part of your business. Which is to say given the knowledge at hand that was available in 2003 you made the worst possible business choice. The market since then has shown that this braindead move of yours has cost you potentially hundreds of millions of dollars.

So my question to you is do you often wonder how your absolute idiocy literally cost you 100 times your weight in gold?

I don't think Fallout was as much of a money making machine as you think it was. In fact, they shut down black isle for a reason, and that reason was because black isle were making games for PC only (In think), and PC gaming wasn't as big around that time. That's why you saw the eventual shift of the Fallout franchise to the console market. At that point in time, Interplay were in serious debt, and so they would be more focused on creating 'safe' games, not taking gambles. Bethesda turned the franchise into a more 'palatable' (slightly dumbed down) series, that's why they make so much money these days. I don't agree with him raping the Fallout franchise by the way, I'm just playing devils advocate.

The safe game was Baldur's Gate 3. And Interplay messed that up. Fallout 3 was the back up. And Fallout 3 was safer than Interplay's idiotic "console games are cheap" plan which ran counter to the prevailing notion that console games were going to get vastly more expensive. So not only was the plan counter to Interplay's strengths it would have never worked. Superman 64 was their guide to the console business.

All Interplay had to do was refinance, concentrate on their strongest studio(Black Isle), release solid games and profit. It was very much in their power to release profitable RPGs while transitioning into consoles in the exact same way Bioware and Bethesda were doing at the time and then they would be in prime position to release mega popular RPGs.

Having met the man, it would do VERY little. Like Raph Koster, Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, and many others with huge egos, their arrogance blinds them. Herve blames everybody and everything but himself and his actions. Any such interview on this site would be just as pointless as all the interviews with Raph Koster about the failure of Star Wars Galaxies.

Arrogance...
