I would recommend VirusTotal. It's in browser, and you can upload a file for scanning. Within a minute or two it scans the virus with about 50 different anti-virus programs. It's free, too. Only problem is you can only upload files up to 125 MBs. I use it on every file I get off the internet before I open it.

Be sure not to use it for private (or corporate) files. They sell whatever you upload to companies with subscriptions to their service. The idea is that subscribed antivirus and security companies get to take a closer look at the suspicious files, but in practice there's quite a few more shady companies who use it for more nefarious means.

Ah, yeah, true. I only use it for programs and random stuff off the Internet.

Seems to be a growing problem. I wonder how difficult it would be to make and sell computers that were fundamentally more secure against these security threats. And also more invisible on the net.

Well, OEMs already sell computers infected with their malware, so it wouldn't be in their best interest to make them safe.
