Darklands, a roleplaying game set in medieval Germany is now available as a free download at the Home of the Underdogs

This game is a true underdog which never really got the recognition it deserved due to some crippling bugs it was initially released with. It was quickly patched, but by then it was already too late and it quickly faded into obscurity.

I really love this game. It is very clearly historical, but there are at times moments that can only be explained by the super natural. Its all things the people of the time believed in though, so it does not feel out of place. Its amazingly open ended with no real "Ending" although there are many story lines and plots to follow. You can really play a character however you want, being as good or evil as you like and your choices have a clear and visible impact on the game world. The game has a low learning curve, but its difficulty is very high at the beginning and you will find yourself slinking away like a whipped dog if you do not include some knightly figures in your party quickly.

The character generation system is very nice too, letting you choose your prior occupation and history before you decided to drop everything to become an adventurer.

It is a dark, brutal world of superstition and fear. Secret cults meet to forge deals with demons, robber barons prey on weak peasants and wealthy merchants. The church is both a rock of stability and hope and a powerful and corrupt force of evil. This game is simple one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

I could go on, but I'll stop.

If you like RPGs, you really should check it out.
