Dialogue Options- Convincing

ColdWinter

First time out of the vault
I think it would be quite nice if it took more choices in the dialogue to convince a person to, for example, let you pass. I say that because it annoys me when I see something like:

NPC: You can't pass, this is restricted area.
vault_dweller: Oh, come on...
NPC: Okay, but remember, I'm watching you.

That's so god damn sweet... If people were so trustworthy in the real world...

That's a simple time-and-effort issue. Remember you had to convince the people in Modoc somewhat elaborately before they'd be convinced the Ghost Farm people were a-okay.

Then there's the player-vs-NPC issue. Since Fallout has all kinds of tests on speech, charisma and intelligence to check whether or not you can convince someone, it seems a bit odd to put it into the player's hands whether or not his NPC is convincing enough.

Opening certain convincing-speech-trees with the aformentioned skills would work. But again, loads of work for the writers. Good idea, though

Well, there were some examples of having to work hard to convince people, like Jack in NCR, but the problem is, how do you know which line to take with someone?

I always had one hell of a time when I forgot to save before one of these encouters and then said something wrong. Great! That's a reload and a redo of hours of work.

Yeah but if you said something wrong you'd usually get a different direction to go, that was one of the great things about Fallout no matter how much you mucked sub quests up you could play to the end with out reloading (unless you got killed).

It might be a lot of work for the writers but to make immersive dialogue with lots of branches is the whole point of making a rpg, isn't it? If they are just going to have simple one line responses and then a lot of combat they should of bought the license to FOT2 not FO3.

I think that dialogue options are a "key" part of the series. They should improve upon it a lot if the game will meet my expectations.
BoS SUCKED! Not only did the game suck in general, but the dialogue ruined the experience. It was like the creators said , "Console gamers are all 10 year old brats, let's dumb it down a bit." I find it hard to even complete that freaking game because of the dialogue and..... well everything else.

Ya, get off ya hands, ya lazy bums!

Veritably, there ought to be a diplomatic solution for everything... I hated it when I couldn't have talked the Regulators into just going the fuck away (j/k)

I agree that there should be a diplomatic solution for most things, but not for everything. That just wouldn't be realistic. "Either you fight or die" situations, basically.

Diplomacy is a huge portion of the fallout series and even though this may place a large burden on the writers at Bethesda, it is crucial that there are multiple dialogue paths that can be taken in social situations. Obviously Im repeating some things said by other users here but you are right, not everything can be solved by using your superior intellect to convince NPC's of your position. If this is in fact a post-apocalyptic wasteland, people are harsh, situations and times are desperate and people would certainly KILL for that scrap of food or that ammo clip or weapon. If this can be solved with words then so be it, but there is definitely a time and place to completely blast someones face beyond recognition with your [insert weapon of choice]. This is the game we love, hopefully the developers will stay true to that series.
