Direct2drive

I bought VTM: Bloodlines from there.

They seemed like an okay place, took a while to DL but that's about it.

I have one or two games with d2d. Oblivion and Psi-Ops. Didn't have any problem downloading or installing either.

I've used GamersGate, GOG, Steam, D2D and Impulse. Honestly, other than personal preference and the issue of what kind of DRM they use, I have never had problems with any of them, and never really noticed an appreciable difference in DL speed (but I don't really pay attention to that) or how well it runs.

Thank you for such an elaborate answer. I have also experience with GamersGate and it has always worked perfectly. (Well if it didnt I could easily storm their office) But I've yet to try other services until I get some reviews.

Does everything stay on your account so if you format your drive you can just log in and redownload free of charge?

Yes. That's true for all the services I listed.

GamersGate, Direct2Drive and GOG all give you a file to download which, technically, you can just keep, but I'm fairly sure GG and D2D both use DRM to track your number of installs.

Steam and Impulse use a a downloader program, which is optional for D2D and GOG, and which is the only way to install and uninstall for those two services. Bit of a pain really.

My biggest beef with D2D is how heavily they stick to country restrictions. That's not really their fault, but they're so fucking unclear about it. Steam just doesn't show you what you can't buy, D2D lets you put it on the order list and get all the way to checkout before noting "hey wait you can't buy this game".
D2D is significantly better in adaptive pricing tho'. Steam just tries to lure you in with weekend deals, but honestly it's kind of a rip-off, especially for Europeans and even moreso for British people.

Example? BioShock is 20 EUR/USD on Steam. Assassin's Creed is normally 30 EUR/USD, but now 50% discounted to 15 EUR. Both those games are 10 bucks on D2D. Admittedly, they don't sell AC outside North America and don't sell BioShock to Germany (and BioShock is currently also 50% off on D2D if I note correctly), but that's a pretty stiff difference, even for Americans.

Steam's got pretty lazy about competitive prizing, and every slobbers all over their weekend deals. Gotta keep an eye out on them, they'll rip you off before you know it.
