do bags do anything?

First time out of the vault
been playing fallout 1 and gonna start on 2 soon in anticipation of fallout 3, never played them. Getting a hang of the clunky controlls but theres something im having trouble figuring out

do bags do anything in this game? I found one in a shelf a while back and it had money in it but whats it do after that? It doesnt' seem to let you put stuff in it for less weight or anything, do you just sell em when you loot them?

also stuff like lizard on a stick and fruit... do you just eat it for health or what? havent found much use for it

tnx

The Bag is for keeping stuff. If you have spare guns you're going to sell and you don't want a mess in your inventory - especially considering the fact that any new item goes into the bottom of the inventory in Fallout 1, instead of the top as it should be - then bags and rucksacks are what you need. The law of conservation of mass must be preseved, so you can't just put the things in the bag and make them lighter ;) It also lets you sometimes keep items you're supposed to give away, but that's cheating and I ain't telling you nothing
As for the iguana-on-a-stick - they're useful for recruiting Dogmeat, otherwise they do nothing. Fruits restore 1-4 HP each, but also give you +1 rad each later. Of course in Fallout 2 you'll find another use for them...

I think you were supposed to be able to open them from an item slot, showing just the contents of that bag in the inventory window. For example, if you put all your stimpacks in a bag, you could open that bag in combat for only 2 AP, instead of the 4 needed for your main inventory. Unfortunately, this doesn't work.

you can use bags as a satchel charge too.

if you put a dynamite on the floor people will turn hostile.

just to avoid to get caught if you fail the steal check.

and that add some "realism"
