Well I am not a reall *fan* of anime, or rather I don't religiously watch it, or for that matter watch it. Then again, on the other hand, Cowboy Bebop is the FUCKING SHIT...

Strangely enough, I've read mostly books lately... Maybe I'm growing up.

Yeah I watch it, but I usually don't find the time. I've got access to a lot of it to... They're usually pretty disappointing after the mangas however.. hoo boy do I have a lot of scanned manga... though I don't read much of that either...

That's cool. Many Mangas lose their artistic essense when translated onto the screen due to low commerical budget or lack of knowledge of animation.

Anyway, any particular favorites?

I like AKIRA, but then again I haven't read or watched much I have... Lain is always good, same with Ghost in the Shell... I guess I just like those epics... I need to watch some of the other epics when I have time.

yep, i love anime. my fav. movies are Princess Mononoke, Jin-Roh, Spriggan and Ninja Scroll. my fav. series are, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing.

"Cowboy Bebop" is terrific, i liked "Trigun" and "Lain" a lot. "Ghost in a Shell" is a masterpiece, i saw "the Professional" and "Venus Wars" again a few months back and still enjoyed watching them (more in visual terms though), i`m waiting to see the film that gave the first price in the Berlin Film Festival to the author of "Princess Mononoke", i think it was the first time an animated movie won one of the big serious festivals, that was great.

I'm not as impressed with Mononoke Hime as most people are... The art was nice and the soundtrack is good, but the story just wasn't very unified, and the ending was lacking.

Vision of Escaflowne was pretty good until after episode 11 (or was it 13?) where they were forced to reduce the series from its intended 48 episodes to 24. I couldn't believe how much ground they covered in the last 15 minutes of the last episode. The soundtrack is wonderful however.

I've actually found myself into the soundtracks more than some of the anime itself. AKIRA's soundtrack is especially good and remains my favorite anime soundtrack. The Lain soundtracks are also very good, especially the Bootleg track "MJXX," which was played during the Roswell/Birth of the Internet sequence.

Hey, I just finished Final Fantasy : The spirts within. That's sort of anime, is it ? ANyway, I liked it. Now I just have to find someone I can convince all that stuff is done by my laptop :-)

"Half the world is composed of idiots, the other half of people clever enough to take indecent advantage of them."

yeah, the ending was kinda cheap. but the story it self was great! it involved alot of Japanese myths and stuff, so i can understand why some people find those a little bit strange (like all the giant, talking animals and forest spirits). but yeah, i loved it.

Escaflowne is also a great serie. the movie was a little bit disapointing though.

Anyone here more than just a casual fan? I consider myself an otaku-in-training.

If you are going to watch Anime, you should verse yourself somewhat in Japanese culture. For example, Inu Yasha, takes place in a medieval, fantasy Japan. With demons, spirits, lords, vassals, and the rest of it.

Also, the Japanese place different importance on the ending. I remember a Japanese movie about a lost boy, by the end... he still was not found. They show him being found in the credits, but it was not that important to the story. This is a major problem to Western audiences.

For anime movies, besides the generically recommended Ghost in the Shell and Mononoke Hime; Metropolis and The Wings of Honneamise. Both are great anime movies, though Wings is rather serious.

I find people fall into three categories with anime:
Avid Viewer (Otaku)
Casual Viewer
Cartoon Network Viewer ("Anime, those are the cartoons with nudity, right?" -actual quote during a discussion of Anime).

Anime is nice to watch, but I just don't have the time. I have access to tons of the stuff, but I just never take the time to download or watch it. Maybe it's a case of "you want what you can't have," only I have, and I don't really want.

I find I enjoy the manga much more than Anime that are based off them, but I'm the same way with manga, I've got lots, but don't read even 1% of it.

I'd like to master the drawing style of anime, or at least be able to render scenes in my mind to paper easier. Perhaps I'll dedicate some time and study it this summer... maybe not...

Manga, the other side of the otaku. I have to say it depends on both the Anime and the Manga. Some have merits which you can not reproduce on the other medium. I would say both have their equal merits.

I'm sort of against people downloading anime though. If it is illegal (as some company has the rights), that is. It's hard enough to get it in the first place, pirates just drive up the cost. Though that is my personal opinion.

I have seen everything I own. I don't really see the point of owning something if you haven't seen/read it.

Interesting. I guess all the closet anime fans from V13 joined here to post. :D Well, then, welcome.

I can almost consider myself as a Sempai in the otaku world even if the term is often misused by people who don't understand anything other than their own backyard.

I've been reading, watching, playing, drawing, designing anime(and all animation/cartoon/art) for almost 20yrs. I was born in Asia, and been able to read in 2-1/2 languages does get me a leg up from everybody here, and yes, the things are cheaper over there(and far more diverse).

I started from Doremao, Dragon Balls(the original), The black surgeon:Jack, Ranma1/2, Saint Seiya, Cityhunter, Video Girl AI, and many others before I had to relocate to the US which almost suffocate me in terms of real anime. If it weren't for a local importer from Asia, and a video library with a owner who is a fan, I would sure have gone over the edge.

My current favorite is Cowboy Bebob(quite nice, considering it's from Bandai, it had carried over better than some of the others), Patlabor:The Movie 1&2(simply brilliant, the budget on this thing must have been huge, the animation itself is breathtaking), Macross Plus(it's great, and I am a very critical fan of the original), The Pet Shop of Horrors(mesmerising, I watched both of them 4 times in one week, I like the second one better), Sanctuary(manga, you must understand some aspect of asian culture to get it, it's a excellent series, Extremely Well translated, which is surprising), Crying Freeman*(manga/anime, this is more of a fetish, because I know how it is), Ghost in the Shell(I am a fan and a sucker of anything this man draws because I like the way he draws his gear, gadgets, and guns. This one is a bit rushed for mass market production.), Bastard(the manga, the anime isn't up there quite yet), and Jo Jo's adventures(manga, no idea if it made in English).

I have to mention some of my all time favorite - Red Pig, The Sky Castle, Totoro, ki ki's delivery service, The Wind Valley, Video Girl AI, Cityhunter, Robotech, The black surgeon:Jack, Saint Seiya, The Black Panther Series, The Wind & Cloud series, Kimagure Orange Road, Slam Dunk, Ah! My Goddess, 3*3 Eyes, and many other that will probably never see the light of day in North America because it won't appeal to mass market(as they call it).

I am sad to see the trend of sanitizing, dumbing down, watered down, cut out, degredation anime has suffered while going through the major translation/publishing house in the north america. You can not believe how much stuff they cut out, or watered/dumbing down due to the sensor board or the mass marketing department(not meaning to insult anyone or being racist here), because the stupid ass north american white trash from middle class isn't going to get it(so they say).

Any questions, comments, and anime discussions welcome here. Since I have been around this stuff for so long, I became a smartass know-it-all for most of my North American friends.:D

P.S: I like American cartoons, too, but they are not the topic here, is it? :p

Many of the movies were and are bought in europe during Cannes and Montreaux festivals, beeing showcased in a network of sci-fi/horror/fantasy festivals all across Europe. So we get less political correct versions most of the time, wich is nice. The series normally are the same like the american versions, wich sucks...

I never saw the original version of Princess Mononoke, so yes, it´s not one of my favorites.

Just the other night i was watching a documentary/debate with a lot of japanese anime directors (those from Blood, Ghost in a Shell, Princess Mononoke/Conan and so on). The respect concerning their work since Akira is so great in some european countries, that the documentary passed in a french/german channel called ARTE, before an opera and after a program on literature.

By the way i do prefer european comics (bande-dessinée), particularly Hugo Pratt works, and it´s very interesting to see how the work of USA authors like Frank Miller, european authors like Moebius/Giraud and manga authors interact, taking turns on how one inspire the others.

Well, there is a reason why I call myself Otaku-in-training. I hardly claim to have a great knowledge in anime and manga, but I want to learn more.

For me, it came from a different route. I have always been a big fan of Japanese culture. I studied everything I could about it, and still do. I am fast friends with the local Japanese teacher (though I don't speak the language, I have a horrible skill at language, and know better than to follow a lost cause... though most of my friends either know Japanese or study it).

Depending on which publishing house you buy from, some of it can be quite accurate. It's mainly the stuff that they put on public television that gets butchered (Taking out the Girls Day episode of Pokemon?). I know most of my sources, which are fan-done (and legally), are trust-worthy. Besides, the average American anime viewer is an idiot (Actual quote "Anime is that porno tentacle sex cartoons?").

My current favorite is Metropolis. Production values through the roof, but it paid off. I'm glad they finally got a chance to adapt the manga, and make such a great work out of it. I'm also really quite glad that it achieved general released, and wasn't changed in the process. Mononoke Hime, with Billy Bob Thorton playing a Buddhist monk with a South-West American accent haunts my dreams yet.

Let's see my favorites (I'm into comedy):
Martian Successor Nadesico, Geobreeders (Manga), Tokyo Babylon, FLCL, Inu Yasha, Excel Saga, Tenamonya Voyagers, Otaku No, Hyper Police (Manga and Anime), and Magic Users Club.

A few more points. I am not a closet anime fan, always was upfront about it... why else would I adopt the title "Otaku-in-Training". Besides, making this place my new cozy abode.

Very interesting. Do you have a pic for metropolis? I sometimes get confused between English names and other names.

Have you seen most of the titles I mentioned?

As for comedy. Urusei Yatsura is a funny series. Of course the old favorite is Ranma1/2. I can't seem to remember anything else off the top of my head.

Sure, in fact I can give you some more information about it. The full title is "Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis", which might give you a clue about what manga it was based apon. Directed by Rintaro, and the screenplay by Katsuhiro Otomo. As for a picture, here is the US version cover:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005V4XG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

As for the titles you mentioned. I have seen "Black Jack" as it is known by... about everyone I know. Ranma 1/2, Cowboy Bebob, Patlabor, Macross, Ghost in the Shell, Totoro, and Ki-Ki's Delivery Service are all things which just about every anime fan I know have seen. I have seen Pet Shop of Horrors (great, in a very strange way... as you said, mesmerizing), Bastard (the Anime, hope to get some of the manga soon), Sanctuary, Cityhunter, Robotech, Black Panther, Ah' My Goddess, and 3*3 Eyes. Some of the rest, I have no idea. Either I have never heard about them, or I know them by another name.

Currently I'm watching Eva (for the third time now) and DNA^2. Well, and Hyper Police when I can get my hands on it.

Where do you get your supply of daily anime addiction? Meaning, where do you pick up your animes? I usually avoid picking up stuff in the North American market if I can help it. Most of the stuff is over-priced, watered down, and oh, you know what I am talking about. :)

DNA^2 is made by the same artist who did Video Girl AI. He is one of the best anime artist out there, but you may have to try to find original mangas for it.

Pet Shop of Horrors (great, in a very strange way... as you said, mesmerizing)

So it got you, too, uh? :D Which epsiode did you like?

Have you ever seen Samuri-X (I think that's the english name)? It slipped my mind because it's kinda a recent pick up for me. It's actually better than I expected, because I thought it was just another cut-them up for the mass market.

Totoro, and Ki-Ki's Delivery Service are done by the same artist who did The Sky Castle, The Wind Valley(original), and Red Pig. Those three are probably some of my favs movies. The word is that the Disney bought rights to these films so they can sit on them and not having them competing in the market with their films.(they know they don't have a chance in hell to beat them)

How did you like Sanctuary? It's very Japanese, it's very traditional, and it's very dark. I adore it.

Cityhunter - the anime that they show here does not do the artist justice. If you can find some original manga, you'll find out he is one of the most talented anime artist there is. His ability to cature light and emotion, and that hair, is just amazing.

Bastard (the Anime, hope to get some of the manga soon), 3*3 Eyes
are good series that aren't finished to say the least. Most of them are still in heavy story development the last time I checked. Both manage to fullfill my anime fantasy desires. :D
