Downtime

Odin

We've had some downtime on our server today, our technies are working on the problem right now. You might notice some downtime during the day, but we'll get it back up and running for 2005! 8)

So Jebus lost an incredibly long post due to downtime? Odin, can we arrange for technical difficulties to happen more often? :)

The reason for all this downtime is that NMA is being hit hard by this worm, and we are taking some precautions to prevent it from gaining access.

Since this worm has hit we've had to turn off the ability to upload files and pictures, we're working on solutions right now.

Ah. I guess that explains why the board ate up a huge post negating every damn argument in this article that I spent in total 2.5/3 hours work on.

I don't think I've been that pissed off in weeks.
Two solutions:
A) use Firefox. Pressing the 'back' button on Firefox will go back a site, AND fill in the previously filled in data in the post fields.
B) Do not type for 2.5-3 hours in a row in your browser. Particularly because usually a session ID only lasts for 2 hours or so, and this can cause problems when pressing the 'submit'' button.

EDIT: Tell me if you're not going to continue that response, because then I will.

The typing itself didn't take me all that time. Only 45 min., perhaps. Most of the time spent was doing research.

Nah, I'll probably re-type it later today.
It'll be the 'light' version, though. No way I'm going to go through all those pages of legal and economical text again. Damn, the EU legislation I read... My head still spins.

*EDIT* Hey, perhaps we can do it together!

Oh, no! Beware Jebus and Sander, duo from depths of Hell!

On topic: Why doesn't Google do anything to stop this worm from spreading? As I understand it, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to block malicious searches. So what the fuck are they waiting for?

Freedom of information? Spirit of the Internet?

Actually, it's probably due to the fact that people with it or trying to stop it are also doing searches with some of the stuff people with ill intent would be using.

Thats horrible Jebus. The same happened to me and here's what I do to get around it:

When you post or make an update select and copy all the text. This way if you lose the connection you can just paste.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

P.S.

In a funny and ironic twist as I first made this post my PC closed my browser just as I went to select and copy all the text...thus rendering my above advice useless at the time I first tried to post this...God sure love's jokes...

:?

Internet Explorer sucks. Back when I was still using it, I had such problems ALL the time. The browser often crashed (very often), and if I happened to click the Submit button during a downtime, the contents of the post were inevitably lost. Copy/paste was problematic too - namely, even if I copied the text, it would still get lost whenever the browser crashed. The only way to make sure it's preserved was to paste it to notepad or suchlike before attempting to submit it.

Firefox never crashed on me. Not a single time. Not even when it was still in beta version. People, get Firefox right away - it's for your own good.

I wondered why the hell I couldn't log in the other day.

I started using Firefox today because it doesn't do some annoying things that IE does. (I've had it on my hard drive for months, but never used it.)

I paste almost EVERY post I make in any forum to MS word to spell-check it.

More like ctrl+a, ctrl+c, ctrl+c. Better that you KNOW you copied your text but be careful, if your keyboard's Control key is messed up... You could kill all of your text.

The only reason I ever spellcheck is for typos, which are annoying in a long post. - Colt

Bizarre, especially with NMA actually having a spell-check module, isn't it? ;)

I used to have a Word document on my desktop, used it not only to spell-check, but also to save content of posts in case power went off.

Only the for long, valuable posts, though. (Not like this plus one)

You spellcheck for typos? You don't say! :o

Uh... Yes... When you type around 80 WPM on average, some typos are going to creep in. - Colt

It's kinda hit and miss though. Far from perfect, but better than nothing. I think using Word might be overkill though (unless you're posting an epic).

Half the words I misspell the NMA spell-checker doesn't pick up, so I use word.
