Dual Monitor glitches

I bought a new display to finally realize my decade-old dream of having two monitors.

On startup, there are some graphical errors on my old samsung syncmaster, particularly when scrolling in a window, but in general it seems linked to input. Maybe not, haven't tested it that much.

This "goes away" after a minute or so, or even earlier. So far I've seen a correlation with starting and fiddling with catalyst control center and the problem ceasing, but I don't know if this is causal.

A friend of mine has the same graphics board, Radeon HD5870, and he recently bought a second monitor as well, and experienced the same problem. He solved the problem using what he describes as "fucktard workarounds" at first, ie opening catalyst every time he booted up, and closing it again. But he then found some other final solution on google which he can't remember, but it was "stupid simple".

Any ideas? Because right now I'm perfecting that fucktard workaround.

Details:

Syncmaster P2350 on DVI to DVI
ASUS VN247h on DVI (board) to HDMI (display)

Same resolution, had to fiddle with overscan in catalyst to get the size right on the ASUS, really strange OSD, V/H-pos and size are locked, wat?

Sounds like a driver issue. Especially since you're resolving it via software fiddling.

I would check if there have been any similar reports on their forum (or equivalent) and see if I could find a version of the drivers where this have not been reported. Of course that could result in other issues, but worth a shot.

Latest driver made it worse, might be some old one that works, some people suggest rolling back to 11.8.

Tried turning off AMD Overdrive, seems to have solved the problem for now but who knows. When I did that the GPU clock went from 157 to 400 and the idle temp went up 10-15 degrees C. Some people said it was the constant switch between clock frequencies (in high-performance mode or some shit I guess) that fucked something up when running dual, but again I have no idea.

What are the graphical errors? Tearing? Artifacting?

Tearing, I guess, not sure about the lingo really, but there are horizontal breaks in the bottom part of one screen, it flickers so fast I can't really give a detailed description.

It consistently disappears when I disable AMD Overdrive. I've looked at the core frequencies in afterburner before turning it off and it keeps going between 157 and 435, I assume hopping between some idle mode and moderate load. When I disable it and the frequencies sit stably at 400 in idle and 875 when I play a game it's never a problem.

Unfortunately AMD Overdrive seems to turn itself on every reboot for no reason so I have to go into catalyst and turn it off every boot. Youtube clips induce momentary similar effects on start and when I close the tab/window.
