Dwarf Fortress

I tried it a couple of years ago and though it was pretty awesome, but got bored soon anyway.

The system is quite complex and deep. What the game lacks, though, is a proper in-game tutorial that clearly explains all the features of the game in detail. Right now you pretty much have to surf all the possible DF forums and sites to get info.

What'd also be cool is if someone made a 3D or 2D/3D (kinda like Dungeon Keeper) engine for it. I haven't heard of that Stonesense thing before so I think I'm gonna try it now. Thanks.

There are plenty of initial impressions on their forums. Also, I tried it out myself. It's not a joke, but it is an alpha version, so it's kind of unstable.

Well, the website is still up, but it's definitely overburdened. I'm having a tough time accessing the forums, too.

There are a bunch of new features, and I can't recall them all, but off the top of my head, there's a new hospital building along with a doctor profession. There's also some new military stuff. Then there's the different cultures of animal men that you can encounter. There's a lot more, but at the moment this is all I can recall.

My first Doctor Dwarf is going to be named Gordon Freeman. Awesome stuff, although it runs slow on my comp.

I noticed that there are a lot less points without aquifiers. Oh well. Goldenlaw the Hammer will be built, no matter what!

Oh no. Why NOW?

I need to write a whole bunch of papers. Dwarf Fortress is one of the poisons I definitely can't refuse. This is going to draw away all time and life I have for the next...oh I don't know, probably till my fort gets around 100 dwarfs and I've build the next megastructure, or until I've finally found a way to quickly ruin an entire fort in matters of seconds.

Damnit, I'm going to try and resist.

DF 0.31.05 is out!

This is a really addictive game! If you didn't give it a try yet and don't hold graphics as a must have, do it. I've come across it when .40b was released, and since then, many things were added continously.

Now, version 0.31.05 is out, with many bugs that existed in .03 fixed, including the one that always crashed the game when trying to use graphics mode.
Also, since .04,
the game has been being rendered in 3D mode, using OpenGL, but 2D mode is also supported.
and for Linux and Mac users out there, now DF has been ported to both OSs.

EDIT: Btw, about Stonesense, if you have a dual or multi core processor and at least 2GB ram, I recomend it. It's great to see your dwarves running around, and the program doesn't change much (if not at all) in FPS for me.
I usually use it, but as a open-see-how-things-look-close visualizer.

Sorry to necro my old thread but I figured it would be better than making a new one (since this existed).

For the past little while I've been playing this seriously and really enjoying it. What helped ease me into the game was the Lazy Newb Pack (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0) which puts some nice tile graphics in, gives you various mods and whatnot to make the game a tad more approachable.

Anybody make anything really crazy in DF (like a pressurized magma cannon)?

Major props for posting that newb pack. Having all the helpful stuff in one tidy package will be great help. :D
Time to let my nation drown in cats.
